First day that the chicks actually ventured outside on their own. The heat in the coop finally pushed them out- window open and still reading about 95°F in there, so they were more than ready for a change.
At first, they stayed close to the door, just standing there taking in the fresh air. A few steps out, then back in, then out again. Slow and cautious, but clearly curious.
Heat like we have been experiencing so early in the summer is something to watch when you have chickens. Chickens can handle cold better than people think, but heat builds stress fast – especially in a crowded brooder or coop.
Some tips: make sure there is plenty of ventilation, fresh cool water available at all times, and shade and cooler ground areas if they’re outside. Avoid overcrowding so they can spread out, and watch for signs like panting, wings held away from the body, and lethargy.
Once they got outside, they seemed much more comfortable, just scratching around in the grass and staying low in the shade!
