First day that the chicks actually ventured outside on their own. The heat in the coop finally pushed them out- window open and still reading about 95°F in there, so they were more than ready for a change.

At first, they stayed close to the door, just standing there taking in the fresh air. A few steps out, then back in, then out again. Slow and cautious, but clearly curious.

Heat like we have been experiencing so early in the summer is something to watch when you have chickens. Chickens can handle cold better than people think, but heat builds stress fast – especially in a crowded brooder or coop.

Some tips: make sure there is plenty of ventilation, fresh cool water available at all times, and shade and cooler ground areas if they’re outside. Avoid overcrowding so they can spread out, and watch for signs like panting, wings held away from the body, and lethargy.

Once they got outside, they seemed much more comfortable, just scratching around in the grass and staying low in the shade!

Share your time and talents during the fair by volunteering with 4-H!
🍀Our 4-H Showcases rely heavily on volunteers in order to provide a supported and successful show experience for our 4-H youth! To volunteer with the 4-H Showcases, you do not need to be a screened volunteer with Minnesota 4-H - and even youth can help out, too!
📞 Questions on volunteer opportunities? Contact the Extension Office at 218-732-3391.

‼️Remember - All 4-H youth hoping to receive a program fee scholarship for state and regional show events must have volunteered with the Pre- and Post-Fair Cleanups (June29 and July 19), as well as one 4-H Showcase event at the county fair as outlined in our 2025-2026 Leaders Council Scholarships document.

The chicks are getting more active every day. Make sure to unmute the video for little tapping sounds from their feet across the floor! They’ve also been digging and scratching. Even this young, they already have that natural instinct to scratch. They’re getting a lot more personality every day!

05/18/2026

Week 3 with the chicks, and they’re getting a bit more curious. Even though they are interested in being outdoors, they haven’t been too eager to venture out with these cooler temps we’ve been having. As they feather out and we get some warmer days, they’ll become more confident about exploring outside. Right now, they seem pretty content watching from the doorway!
