For 19 months, Erik has been on the road — visiting every county across western Minnesota, again & again.

One goal: to show what real representation could look like if your representative actually took the time to listen.

He isn't concerned with which party you belong to, who you voted for, or whether we agree on every issue. What matters is that we have the conversation — that we learn from one another & come to understand how our choices can ripple out to touch someone else's livelihood, home & future.

That's what this campaign has been about from the very beginning. & tens of thousands of conversations later, Erik is showing a different path to a different outcome.

I recently met with leadership & staff at Productive Alternatives in Perham, MN. This is a non-profit social services agency. They provide employment, disability, mental-health & community based human services in rural Minnesota. Their headquarters are in Fergus Falls and they have locations in Moorhead, Little Falls, Alexandria, Brainerd, Fosston & Hoffman. They provide services to roughly 1,000 per day and employ hundreds of people. I was impressed by the Perham facility and the environment they have created. I met with some of their service recipients and employees too. I believe these are good people, doing the right things for the right reasons. They aren't doing this to get rich.

As we combat fraud, we need to remember there are service providers doing it right. They shouldn't be punished. Neither should the people receiving services. I've suggested we should adopt a "Public Trust Score" so not all providers are lumped together when it comes to oversight. This is what I mean when I say we need to use a scalpel, not a chainsaw.

Productive Alternatives is in a particular bind because transportation is one of the services they provide to the rural communities they operate in. I heard them say they put on close to a million miles a year helping those with disabilities access services. Rising operating expenses, plus cuts in funding don't exactly lead to better outcomes. Services, and ultimately clients suffer.
