Even if you were walking through your path through the woods every day for years do not think that you have already seen all what's there. It just happen to me.
I hiked through my local woods for years. And I'm always finding something new, something what sometimes deeply surprising me, like this American Red Squirrel.
Species very common in the North Woods of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan or northern New England, but here, in Illinois?
I do not recall seeing one here, even if we are in within southern reaches of their range.
Big surprise, especially here, that close to home.
It did not happened in the Dam #4, but very close to it, in one of the Forest Preserves bordering it.

I'm proudly announcing that the new bird has been added today to the bird sightings list of the Dam #4 South Woods FP: Pileated Woodpecker. Today I heard him, seen him, but I was not fast enough to photograph him :( So I documented his work. Size of the woodchips were close ot the man's thumb!

I have a wonderful walk in the Woods today. Snow's thawing and the water level in the flooded flood plain subsiding. There's more than a foot of air between the ice sheet and the water (or the ground) now, so be careful while walking - if the ice break under your weight you can easily hurt (if not break) your legs!
Not too many birds were present in the Woods, but mammals are up and active: coyote, opossum, raccoon and a way TOO MANY deer (actually, I counted 16 in both units, north and south of Devon Ave. ! 16! ).

I'm really happy to report that I saw yet another "first" for the Woods today: a Yellow-throated Warbler! A wonderful, rarely seen bird!

05/13/2018

Woods were hoping with birds this afternoon. During the two hours walk I observed 52 bird species, all "easy" warblers included. Among them even a female Hooded Warbler, which is not that easy to find. Amazing!

05/11/2018

There's a big push of migrating birds through the woods tonight. I've counted 65 bird species, out of which 20 were warblers!

This site made my day today. Can you tell which bird creates wood chips that big? There's only one - Pileated Woodpecker, and I never saw it, heard it or saw the effects of it's work at the Dam #4 South Woods FP. Until today.
