Thank you to the Junior League of Evanston-North Shore for their generous $10,000 grant, which is going to help fund the vital social skills programs that Have Dreams provides. We were excited to welcome Karen Burchell and Valerie Rowlands of the Junior League of Evanston-North Shore to our Evanston facility, where they got to see first hand how the League's wonderful gift will impact the lives of the participants we serve.

Have Dreams therapists meet each client where they are, whether that's focusing on understanding a new autism diagnosis; working on relationship skills or executive functioning, addressing anxiety, depression, or managing life stressors; unpacking experiences with autistic masking and burnout and advocating for accommodations at work, school, home, or in the community; planning for a more independent future; or whatever that individual needs. We know the need for autism-specific, neuro-affirming care is essential for autistic individuals of all ages.

For parents of neurodivergent children, the shift from school year to summer break can be challenging. To help, Have Dreams has created a "Parents" folder on the navigation bar of our homepage. There you can download social stories and home visual supports that can help with the transition from a structured school day to a more unpredictable summer schedule. These free resources were created by Caroline McCarthy, Director of Training and Consultation at Have Dreams, who provides expert consultation to ASD families, schools and other organizations. To check them out, please visit https://havedreams.org/ and click on "Parents".

For Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we're highlighting our neurodivergent-affirming counseling services at Have Dreams. Our therapists meet each client where they are, whether that's focusing on understanding a new autism diagnosis; working on relationship skills or executive functioning, addressing anxiety, depression, or managing life stressors; unpacking experiences with autistic masking and burnout and advocating for accommodations at work, school, home, or in the community; planning for a more independent future; or whatever that individual needs. With new research from the University of British Columbia and the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel University indicating that nearly 78% of autistic children have at least one mental health condition, we know that the need for autism specific, neuro-affirming care is essential for autistic individuals of all ages. Like in all of Have Dreams' programs, our counseling sessions utilize structure, visual tools, and hands-on activities and exercises to support clients in working toward their unique goals. To learn more about our counseling services, including our free virtual Parent/Caregiver Support group, please visit: https://havedreams.org/about-counseling-services

"Working at Have Dreams has made an impact on me by being able to contribute to promoting inclusion, understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism within the community. We have been able to create inclusive environments and advocate for the rights and needs of people with autism, and ultimately fostering greater acceptance and support for people affected by ASD. This has allowed me to be part of a compassionate and dedicated team that is committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by autism."
-Caroline McCarthy, Director of Training and Consultation

04/25/2024

"One of our core missions at Have Dreams is to support members of the autism community in finding their voices and advocating for their needs. In my work one-on-one with neurodivergent clients, including adults who were diagnosed with autism later in life, it is a privilege to witness and support these individuals' journeys as they learn about their ASD and consider what they want (or don't want) others to know about their neurodiversity. It is a humbling experience to support these clients as they identify language to describe their experiences and gain resources and tools that can empower them to live in more authentic ways at home, at school, at work, and in the community. Thank you to the individuals that allow me to be a part of this journey with them and to the Have Dreams community of staff, donors, and supporters for the opportunity to do so."
- Lora Slutsky, Director of Clinical Services and Therapist

"My brother Zach, who is on the autism spectrum, attends an adult program at Have Dreams called Life SCILS. Every weekend, my brother asks me, 'On Monday, I will be seeing my friends at Have Dreams?' Every time he asks me this I feel so many emotions, since I remember so vividly how often my brother would acknowledge his own lack of friends when he would compare himself to neurotypical people like myself. Have Dreams provides community and friendships to individuals like my brother, who without Have Dreams, would be missing out on this incredibly valuable aspect of life for all people: sense of community, happiness, and lasting friendships."

-Alex Bonk, Have Dreams Academy
Program Supervisor

We would love your support so kids, teens and adults with autism can continue enjoying friendship and community, as well as pathways to employment and independence through Have Dreams!
