No parent should have to climb alone.

On Sunday, September 27, our community will come together in Park Ridge for the second annual Climb for NW Chicago, a family-friendly walk benefiting Postpartum Support International.

The Climb raises awareness, reduces stigma and supports individuals and families affected by perinatal mental health challenges. It is also an opportunity to remind new and expecting parents that help, understanding and a supportive community are available.

In addition to the walk, the morning will include Community Villages, a Kiddie Dash, music, snacks, post-walk movement activities and goodie bags.

Park Ridge has a proud tradition of honoring those who have answered the call to serve our country.

Nominations are now open for the City’s 2026 Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Each banner recognizes an individual service member with ties to Park Ridge and features their name, branch of service and photograph.

Eligible nominees must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Currently live in Park Ridge
• Previously lived in Park Ridge for more than 20 years
• Graduated from a Park Ridge high school
• Lived in Park Ridge at the time of enlistment

Applications must include a photograph of the veteran—preferably, but not necessarily, in uniform—and a DD Form 214 or other official documentation confirming military service.

Nominations are due Friday, October 2.

If there is a veteran or active-duty service member in your family, neighborhood or circle of friends who deserves to be recognized, I hope you’ll consider submitting a nomination.

Congratulations to the winners of Park Ridge’s 2026 Residential Beautification Awards!
Each year, the Park Ridge Garden Club recognizes residents whose landscaping, gardens and creativity help make our neighborhoods more beautiful. At our last City Council meeting, we took time to recognize this year’s honorees, who have clearly put in a great deal of time, care and hard work.

Thank you to all of this year’s winners, and to the Park Ridge Garden Club for continuing this wonderful community tradition.

CDs are making one last comeback at the Park Ridge Public Library.

The Friends of the Park Ridge Library will hold a one-time-only Legacy Media Sale on Saturday, August 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Reader Services Department.

Music CDs, adult audiobooks on CD and Playaways will be sold directly from the shelves as the Library makes room for new collections and services.

If you still enjoy physical media—or just miss the days when “skipping a track” sometimes required hitting a pothole—this is your chance to browse and bring home a few favorites.

Although these adult collections are being phased out, Library staff can still help you find music CDs and physical audiobooks through interlibrary loan. Digital audiobooks are also available through Libby and the Palace Project.

Our Library staff is terrific. Let them know what you’re looking for, and they will help you find another way to access it.

Please note: The sale does not include CDs, audiobooks or Playaways from the Children’s or Teens departments.

Back to school…back to activities… Healthy Kids Running Series is back!!!

With school starting again, many families are settling back into their fall routines. If you’re looking for a good way to keep the kids active, the Healthy Kids Running Series at Maine South is worth checking out.

The program is open to kids from age 2 through 8th grade. Your child doesn't have to be an experienced runner to participate. It’s simply a chance for kids to get outside, test themselves a little and have some fun with other local families.

Races are held from 11:00 a.m. to noon on Sundays: September 13th, 20th and 27th, and October 4th and 18th.

Five Sunday races, plenty of fresh air and, with any luck, some tired kids on those Sunday evenings.

Why did the tree apply for a job?
It wanted to put down some roots.

Our friends at Go Green Park Ridge have extended the deadline for their annual Tree & Shrub Sale through September 7.

They have a great selection of native trees and shrubs available, including Swamp White Oak, Bur Oak, Bald Cypress, Kentucky Coffeetree, Prairie Crabapple, American Hazelnut, Winterberry and more.
Trees are $40 and shrubs are $35.

Besides making your yard look better, planting a tree is one of those relatively simple things that pays dividends for a long time. Trees provide shade, help manage stormwater, provide habitat for birds and pollinators and, if you plant one in the right spot, can even help reduce heating and cooling costs.

And there's something pretty cool about planting a tree today that someone may still be enjoying long after we're gone.

Orders are open through September 7, while supplies last.

It is always great to celebrate another investment being made right here in our zip code by one of the businesses serving so many in our community! Last week, I had the chance to join the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Board President Nick Fallico, Chamber members, residents, staff and friends at The Sheridan at Park Ridge for the ribbon cutting and opening of their new Memory Care Embrace Garden.

What a great addition.

The garden was created specifically for The Sheridan's memory care residents, giving them a safe place to get outside, enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, and spend time with family and friends. I think sometimes the investments that make the biggest difference aren't necessarily the biggest or flashiest ones. They're the ones that make someone's day a little better.

This certainly feels like one of those. Congratulations to everyone at The Sheridan at Park Ridge on the new Embrace Garden.

Each year, I hear from people in the community who are looking for ways for their high school-age kids to get more involved in Park Ridge, volunteer their time and learn more about what's happening right here in our zip code.

Here's a good one: applications are open for the Park Ridge Youth Commission!

The Youth Commission is appointed by the City Council and is made up mostly of Park Ridge high school students — freshmen through seniors — along with a few adult and liaison members from organizations around town.

Most importantly, it gives our young people a voice in what happens in their community. Members talk about issues that matter to them and their peers, help organize events, work with other youth organizations around town and can bring ideas and recommendations directly to the City Council.

It is a unique opportunity for a high school student to learn how local government works, develop some leadership skills and have a say in their community.

The Commission meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
