Rain, rain, please go away on Tuesday nights and Wednesday mornings! Our Junior Master Gardener friends want to play outside and get into the garden!

Today, they learned about stems on plants, phloem and xylem, and we talked about the edible stems. The kids enjoyed a rhubarb treat before venturing to our lawn-turned-tomato-garden to help lay down newspapers as a w**d barrier and then cover with mulch to help with moisture retention, w**d suppression, and prevent fungal spores from being splashed onto tomato leaves.

Despite the rain, we have enjoyed learning about plants. We love hearing about how their plants are growing from what they planted at our first session. Keep up the great gardening, kids!

The gardens are planted, and now comes the hard part—waiting for that produce to grow! While you wait, check your supply of canning jars, lids, and screw bands. Inspect them for damage and stock up on quality products from reputable brands that can stand up to the canning process..

Get ready for canning season! Let's start with lids.

Do you know how to ensure a safe canning seal?

Place the metal screw band over the flat lid and apply fingertip tight. In other words, place the screw band on the jar, turn it just until you feel resistance, then turn the band one-quarter turn more. Screw bands that are applied too loosely or too tightly can cause jars to not seal properly.

We are ON for today!

We will just be inside. Kids will be planting their own seeds or house plant. We hope they still plan to attend and hope what we planted last week will grow well with the recent rains. We have supplies for 15-20 youth. Please register at the link!

🍓👩‍🍳 Kids’ Cooking School is back this June! 👨‍🍳🍞

Join NDSU Extension Walsh County for a fun, hands-on cooking experience designed for youth ages 8–12! Participants will build confidence in the kitchen while learning healthy eating habits and trying new foods each week.

If you are a new leader, or looking to strengthen your leadership skills, this training is for you!

NDSU Extension Walsh County is hosting a Lead Local training on Thursday, May 7 in Grafton, ND.

This training is for anyone serving on boards, councils, or committees.
The training helps participants:
*Feel better prepared to effectively serve
*Recognize components of an effective meeting
*Learn basic parliamentary procedure
*Understand personality styles
*Use effective tools when dealing with conflict.
