Half a century of this green space in the heart of the Bronx! 🌿

I was proud to join the Bronx River Community Garden for its 50th Anniversary and present a proclamation honoring its history and growth.

Thank you to garden manager Laura James, whose passion and hands-on leadership help this space flourish year after year. 👏🏽💚

We also honored three important people who helped build this garden: the late Joe Guimento, longtime garden manager; Ms. Nessie, instrumental to gardens across the Bronx; and Mr. Jackman, this year’s MVP, who built the compost bin and volunteers much of his free time. 🌱🙏🏽

Sustainability starts in our neighborhoods, with gardens like this, putting fresh, nutritious produce within reach of local families and showing what we can achieve together.

Congratulations to everyone who has kept these roots strong. I can’t wait to see what blooms next! 🌻

Proud to join neighbors and partners on Wednesday for the ribbon-cutting of Stevenson Square Phase 1 in Soundview. Proof that investing in Mitchell-Lama housing pays off: 58 co-ops for first-time owners and 117 homes for seniors, right here in the Bronx.

Our older neighbors helped build this community and deserve a secure place to grow older among the people they know. Through HPD’s Open Door Program, the co-ops will stay affordable for future buyers, too, keeping families and seniors rooted in Soundview.

I was glad to support state funding for this project, and I’m grateful to the partners who made it happen.

It was a privilege to join NYC Public Schools yesterday for their Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Speaking to the students and families who gathered to honor the culture, history, and heritage we carry was a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

This year’s theme, “Unidos, Somos Más: Together, We Are More,” is a call to lean on one another. That begins in our schools, which are more diverse than ever and must remain safe spaces for every child. When a child misses school, they lose more than instruction. They lose friends, support systems, and a piece of the brighter future every family deserves. We cannot let fear take that promise from them.

I celebrate my Hispanic heritage every day by honoring the sacrifice of my mother and the Latino leaders and trailblazers who came before me, and by prioritizing learning and education in my life and in the policies I support.

Thank you to all the talented students who displayed their energizing performances and artwork with us!

Thank you to Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels, Dr. Brenda García, Chief, Office of Multilingual Learners, and Sadye L. Campoamor for organizing such an enlivening event.

Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana. ¡Unidos, Somos Más!

Honored to sit down with Samuel King of WXXI News/NPR for Hispanic Heritage Month to talk about what it means to represent our community right now: from pushing back on ICE overreach to securing real investment through the LUCHA Fund for Latino-serving organizations across the state.

Grateful for the space to talk honestly. The work continues. Full article linked in bio.

Yesterday, for Hispanic Heritage Month, the New York State Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force and I sat down with Mayor Mamdani to talk through what’s affecting our communities right now, from the everyday to the urgent.

Grateful for a mayor willing to have these conversations with, of course, his hallmark beaming selfies, and for the colleagues who do the work alongside me every day.
