Using Memorial Day — a sacred day of remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to our nation — as a vehicle for political attacks is deeply inappropriate and profoundly disrespectful.
The fallen belong to no political party. They are American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, regardless of political affiliation, ideology, or belief.
There is a time for political debate and disagreement in this country. Memorial Day should not be one of them.
To frame the loss of American service members through a partisan lens for political messaging dishonors the very spirit of unity, sacrifice, and national gratitude that Memorial Day is meant to represent.
As a retired Army officer and someone who has served alongside extraordinary men and women in uniform, I find this type of messaging appalling, divisive, and beneath the dignity that our fallen heroes deserve.
We can disagree politically without exploiting the memory of America’s dead.
