July is Disability Pride Month!

Disability pride is about accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. This landmark law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration on that year. The first official celebration of Disability Pride Month occurred in July 2015, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the ADA.

Each color stripe on the newly designed flag has a meaning:

Red - physical disabilities
Gold - neurodiversity
White - invisible disabilities and disabilities that haven't yet been diagnosed
Blue - emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression
Green - for sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, audio processing disorder, and all other sensory disabilities

The faded black background represents mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse. The diagonal band cuts across the walls and barriers that separate the disabled from normal society, also representing light and creativity cutting through the darkness.

To The Rescue Colorado staff brought the energy to their summer event at The Hive! From friendly competition in the sports simulations to sharing laughs, fellowship, and plenty of good eats, the day was a perfect reminder that strong teams are built both in and outside the workplace.

In our Host Home program, individuals live in private family homes with dedicated caregivers. These caregivers are advocates, teachers, friends and family. Every caregiver in our Host Home Program is actively involved in planning their daily routine and provides the services they need in order to be successful.

Our Host Home program begins with a highly personalized matching process. Our organization meticulously selects host home providers and ensures they have the skills needed to support the individuals we serve.
