Humane Society of Parkersburg

Humane Society of Parkersburg The Humane Society of Parkersburg is a private, non-profit open admission animal shelter serving Wood County, WV.

As Parkersburg and Wood County's only private, non-profit animal agency that also is open admissions, HSOP chooses to accept any and all animals in need. Through adoptions, education programs and spay/neuter efforts, HSOP offers proactive solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis in our area. Donor support and special fundraising events enable HSOP to continue sheltering and providing care for th

ousands of needy, unwanted animals each year. We do not receive any state or federal funding from any entity, nor do we receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Association. A portion of our funding does come from Animal Control services contracts with Parkersburg, Vienna, Williamstown and Wood County.

Let’s talk about rescue partners. ❤️

Years ago, we used to share posts whenever we sent animals to rescue organizations. Sometimes, people would question why we weren’t adopting those animals out locally.

The truth is, times have changed and the need is greater than ever.

Right now, we have 325 animals in our care, and we know our other local humane society has just as many, if not more. That’s hundreds upon hundreds of animals who need homes, and there simply aren’t enough local homes to meet the need.

We used to send animals to rescue partners almost every week. But today, most rescues are full and can very rarely pull animals, especially large dogs.

When Eugene and Ethel came into our care in June, it quickly became clear that they were bonded and needed to stay together. Finding a home for two bonded, large senior dogs is incredibly difficult. The odds were stacked against them.

We tried to find them a home separately, but our efforts repeatedly fell short. So, we reached out to an organization we’ve worked with for many years, a rescue that specializes in senior animals.

We told them about Eugene and Ethel. We explained that they were bonded and needed to stay together.

And they said YES. ❤️

They didn’t just say yes to Eugene and Ethel. They also said yes to a senior with medical needs and a small dog who had watched adoption applications fall through time and time again.

That is the power of community.

And once we had rescue secured for our two Beagles, a wonderful volunteer family stepped up to foster them, freeing up a much-needed kennel for another animal in need.

We also want to give a huge, heartfelt thank-you to our faithful volunteer, Leanne Wright, who always steps up when these animals need to travel — transporting them near and far, helping get them exactly where they need to go and making these rescue connections possible. We are so incredibly grateful for her dedication and willingness to go the extra mile, literally and figuratively, for the animals. ❤️🚗🐾

This morning, our hearts are incredibly full. We are overjoyed, relieved, and overwhelmingly grateful for the incredible community of animal lovers we are lucky enough to be part of.

Rescue isn’t always easy. Sometimes it takes a village. A rescue partner, a foster family, a transporter, and someone willing to simply say yes.

Today, we’re celebrating that YES. 🎉❤️

We hope you’ll celebrate this rescue mission with us, and let it be a reminder that kindness is everywhere.

Today, we’re soaking that in. 🐾❤️

🌧️🐶 Rainy days call for stuffies! 🧸❤️

When the weather outside is gloomy, we like to brighten things up for our shelter pups! Today, all the dogs got to pick out a stuffie to keep them company—and judging by those happy faces, they think it was a pretty great idea. 🥹

There’s just something about seeing a shelter dog proudly carrying around their favorite toy that makes a rainy day a little brighter. 🧸🐾

Thank you to everyone who helps make moments like this possible for our animals. ❤️

Meet Oakley! 💕

Oakley is a beautiful 5 year old girl weighing 68 pounds, and she’s looking for a foster or forever home!

🐶 She gets along well with other dogs and especially enjoys the company of male dogs.

💦 She LOVES the pool, so she’d make an amazing water buddy for someone who enjoys splashing around!

🏡 Most of all, Oakley is hoping for a loving home where she can feel safe, happy, and cherished.

Could you be Oakley’s foster or forever family? If you can’t adopt or foster, please share this post and help us get her seen by the right person. Every share could bring Oakley one step closer to home! ❤️🐾
