Conceptual Drop-Off Location Clarification:
The Wood County Solid Waste Authority would like to provide additional information regarding our concept of a Recycling Drop-Off location for Wood County residents.
The idea is intended to be simple, clean and convenient collection site where residents can bring recyclable materials during operating hours.
KEY POINTS OFTHE CONCEPT INCLUDE:
NO processing of materials on site
NO materials placed or stored on the ground
All recyclables collected in designated containers within a fenced and gated area
Monitored at all times
Partnerships with established recycling facilities for the transportation and processing of collected materials.
The site would function much like a traditional recycling drop-off center. Residents would bring accepted materials, place them into labeled collection containers, and the materials would then be transported to regional recycling partners for processing.
Our goal is to create a clean, organized and well-managed location that helps increase recycling opportunities for Wood County residents while minimizing impacts on surrounding properties and neighborhoods.
As we continue to explore potential locations and partnerships, we appreciate the community's interest and feedback. We look forward to sharing additional information as we determine our next steps.
Together, we can make recycling more accessible and convenient for Wood County residents.

HELP US BRING RECYCLING BACK TO WOOD COUNTY!
The WCSWA is conceptually exploring the possibility of establishing a recycling drop off location for Wood County residents. We believe recycling should be a service available to everyone in our community and are beginning to evaluate options for making that vision a reality.
As a first step, we are seeking approximately one acre of property (no utilities needed on site) that could be made available at little to no cost, or through a long-term lease, to serve as a potential recycling drop-off site.
By working together, we can create a convenient and sustainable recycling solution that benefits our residents, reduces waste, and helps protect our environment for future generations.
If you know of a property owner, organization, business, or community partner who may be interested in discussing this opportunity, please ask them to contact the Wood County Solid Waste Authority at (304) 424-1873 or email us at [email protected]
Together, let's build a cleaner, greener Wood County!

♻️ The 4 R's of Waste Management: Think Beyond Recycling! ♻️

Many people jump straight to recycling, but did you know it's actually the final step in the 4 R's hierarchy?

✅ Reduce – Use less and avoid unnecessary waste from the start.
✅ Reuse – Find new ways to use items before throwing them away.
✅ Repurpose – Transform old items into something new and useful.
♻️ Recycle – When the first three options aren't possible, recycle materials so they can be made into new products.

The most sustainable choice isn't always recycling. The greatest environmental impact comes from reducing consumption and extending the life of products before they ever reach the recycling bin.

Let's challenge ourselves to move beyond "just recycle" and embrace all 4 R's. Every small action helps conserve resources, reduce landfill waste, and protect our planet for future generations. 🌎💚

🌱 Why Composting Matters: Key Benefits of Composting

Composting is more than just recycling food scraps. It provides environmental, economic, and gardening benefits that make a positive impact.

🌍 Environmental Benefits
Reduces landfill waste: Food scraps and yard waste make up a significant portion of household trash. Composting keeps these materials out of landfills.
Lowers greenhouse gas emissions: Organic waste in landfills can produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting helps reduce these emissions.
Supports a circular economy: Nutrients from food and plant materials are returned to the soil instead of being discarded.
🌿 Soil Health Benefits
Improves soil structure: Compost helps soils retain moisture while also improving drainage.
Adds essential nutrients: Finished compost provides plants with nutrients needed for healthy growth.
Encourages beneficial microorganisms: Healthy microbial activity improves soil fertility and plant resilience.
Reduces soil erosion: Compost-enriched soil is better able to hold together and resist erosion.
💧 Water Conservation Benefits
Increases water retention: Compost acts like a sponge, helping soil hold water longer.
Reduces watering needs: Plants grown in compost-amended soil often require less frequent watering.
🌼 Gardening Benefits
Promotes healthier plants: Nutrient-rich soil supports stronger roots and improved plant growth.
Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers: Compost provides a natural alternative for feeding plants.
Can help suppress some plant diseases and pests: Healthy soils contribute to healthier, more resilient plants.
💰 Cost Savings
Spend less on fertilizers, soil amendments, and mulch.
Reduce the amount of waste sent to collection services.
🏡 Easy Impact, Big Results

Every banana peel, coffee ground, eggshell, and fallen leaf can be transformed into valuable compost. It's a simple habit that helps create healthier gardens, healthier soils, and a healthier planet.

"Composting turns yesterday's waste into tomorrow's growth." 🌱♻️
