This bad bug is getting closer πŸ˜• Please be aware of the quarantine if you are in the Cecil or Harford County areas. Examples of regulated articles include landscaping, remodeling, or construction waste; packing materials like wood boxes or crates; plants and plant parts; vehicles; and other outdoor items.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture today issued a spotted lanternfly quarantine for all of Cecil and Harford Counties. This quarantine is effective immediately and will restrict the movement of regulated articles within the quarantine zone that contain the spotted lanternfly in any of its life stages. https://news.maryland.gov/mda/press-release/2019/10/28/department-issues-spotted-lanternfly-quarantine-in-cecil-and-harford-counties/

For about the last two months we've been seeing sudden discoloration of the foliage and death of White Oaks around our area. The University of Maryland Extension is actively researching this, but it seems to be affecting older trees (40-80+ years old) and it's happening fast - trees are looking fine and within 2-4 weeks are showing severe signs of decline.

UMD has not yet identified a single factor causing this but are working hard to do so. The extreme rain that we received last year certainly stressed out many trees, and the drought we've been experiencing over the last several weeks is certainly not helping already-stressed trees.

If you have White Oaks on your property, I'd recommend reading the linked article. It doesn't have answers, but it may help explain so of what's going on - or give you warning signs to look out for. If you have any concerns about your trees, please don't hesitate to reach out to our arborists.
