The history and legacy of Long Island Farm lost its pedestal of preservation today. We mourn the loss of Mrs. Lillian Jenifer, who passed away this morning (5/19/17).
REST IN PEACE: Mrs. Jenifer was instrumental in leading the charge to preserve Cromwell Valley from encroaching suburban development, which culminated in the present day Cromwell Valley Park. She served as vice president of the Friends of Cromwell Valley Park organization.
HISTORY: In 1764, Isaac Risteau bought 21 acres of Long Island from Samuel Stansbury and thus began the saga of the Risteau/Jenifer family’s ownership of Long Island Farm.
Mrs. Lillian Jenifer's family is related to Daniel of Saint Thomas Jenifer, a Maryland Delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and a signer of the United States Constitution in 1787. Daniel Jenifer, Jr. inherited Long Island to hold in trust for his son, Thomas Risteau Jenifer.
The Risteau/Jenifer family continued the lime operation and farming in the valley, and continued the established tradition of slavery at this site up through the Civil War. All throughout American history the Jenifer family members were judges and postmasters, Colonials and Lieutenants, doctors and lawyers.
MEMORIAL FUND: The Jenifer Family has asked that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Lillian Jenifer Memorial Fund, which will go to preserve and maintain "HER" .
