It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this post. 6 years ago, I took on the challenge to revitalize the band program at Parlier High School. I was tasked to create a competitive marching band. We started from a small parade band and grew into a reputable and competitive band and color guard in such little time.
We had many firsts throughout my tenure; first year teachers, first marching band, first time to the beach, first Disneyland parade, first concert band Superior rating, first time students making it into honor ensembles, first field show, first time at WBA Class Championships, first competitive winter guard season, first music majors, and much more.
I believe in high standards. However, more importantly, I believe my students CAN achieve those standards. It may take a bit longer or a different approach, but I firmly believe in my students. In return, they believe in me. They believe that I will be right there with them every step of the way. They believe that I know the way and will never leave them astray. They believe in their own success.
Everything we have accomplished is because we came together as a team. Michael Afu, David Heckman, and Sheilagh Hughes-Luna believed in my vision and direction and incorporated it into their own programs and teachings. It took us time to lay out the foundation (even through a pandemic), but once set, we were able to see where we were going and how we were going to get there. We were destined for success.
As some of you may know by now, I will not be returning to Parlier Unified next school year. I am stepping down on my own free will to be the father that I need to be. I have limited time with my two sons before they graduate high school.
Parlier will forever hold a special place in my heart. Parents and students, thank you so much for embracing my vision and making me feel at home. I am one proud band director.
"Always do the right thing."
Musically yours,
Theodore Tanaleon, Jr.
