🦟 West Nile Virus Awareness Series | Part 3 of 6
Did you know mosquitoes can develop in just a small amount of standing water? Eliminating water sources around your home is one of the most effective ways to help prevent West Nile virus. πŸ’§πŸš«
Take a few minutes to check your yard for items that can collect water, including:
βœ… Buckets
βœ… Old tires
βœ… Children's toys
βœ… Birdbaths
βœ… Pet bowls
Tip and Toss containers with standing water regularly. This simple step helps stop mosquitoes before they become a problem and protects your family and community. πŸ‘πŸ’™

🦟 West Nile Virus is spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. Protect yourself with these simple prevention tips:

🦟 Cover up. Wear loose, light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants to keep your skin protected.
🦟 Repel. Apply an EPA-registered repellent any time you're outside for extended periods.
🦟 Tip and toss. Dump standing water from buckets, pots, and other containers around your property β€” eliminating development sites stops mosquitoes before they start.
Small steps, big protection. πŸ’ͺ

Have you been noticing a lot of mosquitoes in your yard and can't find where they're coming from? Well, yard drains may be the reason! We recommend covering all yard drains with a piece of window screen under the cap to eliminate a source where mosquitoes could develop.

πŸ¦ŸπŸ’‘ Mosquito Control: Understanding the Limits of DIY Traps πŸ’‘πŸ¦Ÿ

You've probably seen "Mosquito Buckets of Doom" and other DIY mosquito traps promoted online as a simple solution for mosquito problems.

βœ… Here's the science: When properly constructed, maintained, and deployed in sufficient numbers, these traps can attract certain mosquito species to lay eggs and adding Mosquito Dunks to the water targets immature mosquitoes before they become adults.

⚠️ However, they are not a complete mosquito control solution.
These "Buckets of Doom":
β€’ Do not reduce the adult mosquitoes already flying and biting
β€’ Do not eliminate the source of a mosquito problem
β€’ May be less effective if not deployed and maintained correctly
β€’ Can become mosquito development sites if treatments are not maintained properly

The most effective way to reduce mosquitoes around your home is still to:
βœ” Dump and drain standing water weekly
βœ” Keep containers, tires, and other water-holding items empty when possible
βœ” Use EPA-approved insect repellent
βœ” Wear long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are active
βœ” Limit outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours when possible
βœ” Report standing water or other water-holding containers that cannot be dumped or drained

Mosquito dunks and granules can be useful when applied correctly in water sources that cannot be drained, such as rain barrels, fountains, and troughs.

πŸ”¬ At CMAD, we rely on science-based mosquito management, including surveillance, source reduction, larval and adult control, and public education.
Let’s work together using factsβ€”not fadsβ€”to reduce mosquito populations and keep our neighborhoods safe. πŸ‘ŠπŸ¦Ÿ
