π¦π‘ Mosquito Control: Understanding the Limits of DIY Traps π‘π¦
You've probably seen "Mosquito Buckets of Doom" and other DIY mosquito traps promoted online as a simple solution for mosquito problems.
β
Here's the science: When properly constructed, maintained, and deployed in sufficient numbers, these traps can attract certain mosquito species to lay eggs and adding Mosquito Dunks to the water targets immature mosquitoes before they become adults.
β οΈ However, they are not a complete mosquito control solution.
These "Buckets of Doom":
β’ Do not reduce the adult mosquitoes already flying and biting
β’ Do not eliminate the source of a mosquito problem
β’ May be less effective if not deployed and maintained correctly
β’ Can become mosquito development sites if treatments are not maintained properly
The most effective way to reduce mosquitoes around your home is still to:
β Dump and drain standing water weekly
β Keep containers, tires, and other water-holding items empty when possible
β Use EPA-approved insect repellent
β Wear long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are active
β Limit outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours when possible
β Report standing water or other water-holding containers that cannot be dumped or drained
Mosquito dunks and granules can be useful when applied correctly in water sources that cannot be drained, such as rain barrels, fountains, and troughs.
π¬ At CMAD, we rely on science-based mosquito management, including surveillance, source reduction, larval and adult control, and public education.
Letβs work together using factsβnot fadsβto reduce mosquito populations and keep our neighborhoods safe. ππ¦
