🚨 BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY FROM PHFD! 🚨

Hey Parma Heights families! As the kids head back to the classroom, the Parma Heights Fire Department wants to help you refresh your safety routines. Protect your family with these vital tips:

🏡 Home Fire Safety & Escape Plans
👉Test Alarms: Test smoke alarms monthly. Change batteries yearly.
👉Two Ways Out: Map two ways out of every room. Pick an outdoor meeting spot.
👉Practice Drills: Run home fire drills so kids recognize the alarm sound.
👉Stay Low: Teach kids to "get low and go" under smoke. Feel doors with the back of hands.
👉Never Hide: Remind children never to hide under beds or in closets.

🔥 Lighter, Appliance, & Backpack Safety
👉Lock Lighters: Keep matches locked away. Teach kids to report any lighters or matches they find to an adult.
👉Kitchen Boundaries: Do not let kids use stoves or toaster ovens unsupervised.
👉Clear Gear: Keep backpacks, jackets, and books away from heaters and outlets.

🚌 Commuting & School Zone Safety
👉Stop for Buses: Stop completely for school buses with flashing red lights.
👉School Zone Speeds: Obey local speed limits. Watch for crossing guards. Put your phone away while walking, bicycling, or driving.
👉Walking & Biking: Map routes together. Ensure bike riders wear fitted helmets.

Let’s work together to keep Parma Heights safe this school year! ❤️🚒

Facing extreme heights and sensitive utility wires, Lieutenant Mason used his training to remain completely calm, executing a flawless rescue and getting the frightened feline back on solid ground without disrupting local communication lines. 👍

We are incredibly proud to serve every member of our community, whether they walk on two legs or four. True leadership means stepping up to solve problems no matter how high the climb, and Lieutenant Mason showed us all what compassion and dedication look like in action. 🌧️⛈️ Be Storm Ready, Parma Heights! ⛈️🌧️

Heavy rain and severe storms can develop quickly. Taking a few simple steps now can help keep you and your family safe.

✅ Stay Informed

Monitor weather forecasts and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

✅ Prepare Your Home

Clear leaves and debris from storm drains and gutters.
Secure or bring inside patio furniture, umbrellas, and other loose outdoor items.

✅ Build an Emergency Kit

Keep flashlights, extra batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, medications, and a phone charger readily available.

✅ Avoid Flooded Roads

Turn Around, Don't Drown! Never drive or walk through flooded roadways. Just a small amount of moving water can be dangerous.

✅ Charge Your Devices

Charge cell phones and portable power banks before the storm arrives in case of power outages.

✅ During the Storm

Stay indoors and away from windows.
If thunder roars, go indoors! Wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before returning outside.

🚨 SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: STAY STORM READY, PARMA HEIGHTS! ⛈️🌪️

With heavy rain storms and potential tornadoes in the forecast, the Parma Heights Fire Department wants to ensure every resident in the City of Parma Heights knows how to stay safe. Severe weather develops rapidly, but taking a few minutes to prepare right now can save lives.
Please review and share these essential safety protocols with your family, friends, and neighbors:

🌧️ Rain & Flash Flood Safety
👉Turn Around, Don't Drown! Never drive or walk through flooded roadways. Just 12 inches of rushing water can sweep a vehicle completely away.
👉Avoid Waterways. Stay far away from rising creeks, storm drains, and low-lying areas in our community parks.
👉Clear Your Drains. Ensure your home's gutters and nearby street grates are clear of debris to prevent localized neighborhood flooding.

🌪️ Tornado Preparedness: Watch vs. Warning
👉Tornado WATCH 🟡 Conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. Stay alert, monitor local Cleveland news, and review your emergency shelter plan.
👉Tornado WARNING 🔴 A tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar! Take shelter immediately.

🏠 How to Properly Shelter
👉Go Low and Interior. Move immediately to a basement, storm shelter, or the lowest level of your home.
👉Avoid Windows. If you do not have a basement, gather in a small, windowless interior room like a bathroom, closet, or central hallway.
👉Protect Your Head. Use heavy blankets, pillows, mattresses, or even a helmet to guard against falling or flying debris.
👉Evacuate Mobile Homes. These structures offer very little protection from high winds; identify a sturdy, brick-and-mortar building nearby to shelter in ahead of time.

📲 Stay Informed & Connected
👉Enable Wireless Alerts. Check your smartphone settings to ensure life-saving Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are turned ON. 👉Charge Your Devices. Power up your cell phones, external power banks, and flashlights in case the power goes out.
👉Keep 9-1-1 Clear. Do not call 9-1-1 to report power outages or ask for weather updates. Only call if there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency.

Stay weather-aware, secure your outdoor items, and look out for your neighbors! Your Parma Heights Fire Department crew is staffed, prepared, and standing by to keep our city safe. 🧑‍🚒🚒

🌡️ HEAT ADVISORY: Stay Safe in the Heat! ☀️🚒

High temperatures can become dangerous quickly. The Parma Heights Fire Department encourages everyone to take a few simple precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors during this heat advisory.

💧 Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid excessive alcohol and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

🏠 Stay Cool
Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. If you don't have air conditioning, visit a cooling center, library, or other public facility.

👕 Dress for the Weather
Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. Don't forget sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat if you'll be outdoors.

⏰ Limit Outdoor Activities
Avoid strenuous work or exercise during the hottest part of the day (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade.

🚗 Never Leave Children or Pets in a Vehicle
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become deadly in just minutes.

❤️ Know the Warning Signs
Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and headache. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and may include confusion, loss of consciousness, hot dry skin, or a body temperature above 103°F. Call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke.

🤝 Check on Others
Older adults, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. A quick phone call or visit can make a big difference.

Let's work together to keep our community safe and healthy during this stretch of hot weather. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another! ☀️💙

Benefits of a Roper Lock Box include:
🏠 Faster access during medical emergencies
🚑 Quicker care when time is critical
🔑 Prevents forced entry and costly damage to doors or windows
❤️ Provides peace of mind for seniors, individuals with medical conditions, and anyone living alone
👨‍👩‍👧 Gives family members confidence that help can get inside if needed

A small investment can make a big difference during an emergency.

💦☀️ Water Safety Starts With You! ☀️💦

Whether you're spending the day at the pool, the lake, or simply cooling off in the backyard, taking a few simple precautions can help prevent tragedy.

🏊 Practice Water Safety:
✅ Never leave children unattended near water—not even for a moment.
✅ Designate a responsible "Water Watcher" whose only job is to supervise swimmers.
✅ Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating or participating in water activities.
✅ Never swim alone.
✅ Avoid alcohol when swimming or operating a boat.
✅ Learn CPR—it could save the life of a loved one.
✅ Make sure pools are protected with fencing and self-latching gates.

Remember, drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds. Staying alert and prepared makes all the difference.

Let's work together to keep this summer safe for everyone. Have fun, stay cool, and always make water safety your top priority! 🌊🚒

🌧️🚒 Rainy Roads Require Extra Caution! 🚒🌧️

Rain can turn an ordinary drive into a dangerous one in seconds. A few simple adjustments can make all the difference in getting you and your loved ones home safely.

🌦️ Remember these wet-weather driving tips:

🚗 Slow Down – Reduce your speed by at least one-third. Speed limits are designed for dry roads, and wet pavement reduces your tires' ability to grip the road.

⏱️ Increase Your Following Distance – Leave 4–6 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. Wet roads mean longer stopping distances.

💡 Turn On Your Headlights – Use your low-beam headlights whenever it's raining so other drivers can see you.

🚫 Never Use Cruise Control – Cruise control can make it harder to regain control if your vehicle hydroplanes.

💧 Avoid Standing Water – Puddles can hide potholes, debris, or damaged pavement, and even a small amount of moving water can carry a vehicle away.

⚠️ If You Begin to Skid or Hydroplane:
• Stay calm.
• Ease off the accelerator.
• Do not slam on the brakes.
• Keep your steering wheel pointed where you want to go and gently steer to regain traction.

🌧️ If You Can't See, Don't Drive. If heavy rain makes it difficult to see, safely exit the roadway and wait for conditions to improve. Never stop on the shoulder of the highway unless it's an emergency.

Your safety is our priority. Taking a few extra moments to slow down and drive carefully can prevent a lifetime of regret.

Stay alert. Stay safe. Arrive alive. ❤️🚒
