My Juneteenth Message:

America is a beautiful country, but even the most beautiful body has blemishes. Slavery was one of them. My American History students were required to read the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. An amazing short story that I suggest everyone who loves our country read. Freddie D achieved the American Dream and continues to inspire.

While six of the nation’s largest health insurance companies reported more than $15 billion in profits in just the first three months of the year, too many Ohioans are still struggling to access affordable mental health care.

As a State Representative, one of my goals is to ensure that mental health treatment is treated the same as physical health care. No one should have to battle insurance company red tape to receive care that their doctor says they need. When insurers delay, deny, or limit coverage, it is patients and families who pay the price.

Mental health care should be accessible, affordable, and available when people need it—not only when insurance companies decide it is profitable. We must strengthen mental health parity laws, hold insurers accountable, and put patients ahead of corporate profits.

Ohioans deserve a health care system that works for them, not one that places barriers between patients and the care they need.

It is always an honor to speak to my friends at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #15. It was especially honorable to join Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio President Jay McDonald in addressing the current and retired members. Thank you for having me!

Growing up, Mom had to rely on foodstamps for a time to keep food in our bellies because dad didn’t pay child support. I am now on a mission to help remove the barrier of food insecurity for all Ohioans, including those who want to attend college and move ahead. Today I went to Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus to check out their student food pantry. I was very moved at how well they are supporting their students.👍🙏 Here is my bill to support efforts like CCC’s:

Proud to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring $22 million back to Cuyahoga County for roads, schools, nonprofits, and community projects. The state capital budget is one of the most important investments we make. These investments will have a lasting impact on residents throughout our region.

Northeast Ohio museums, theaters, parks and community projects are set to receive state funding after Gov. Mike DeWine signed Ohio’s $3.7 billion capital budget.

Honored to be a part of this celebratory event.👍🙏

Growing up with food insecurity, I was proud to attend the groundbreaking for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s new West Side location. This investment will help expand access to nutritious food and strengthen the Food Bank’s ability to serve families across our region.

But while I’m excited about this milestone, I’m also saddened by the growing need for food assistance in our communities. No one working hard, raising a family, or living on a fixed income should have to worry about where their next meal will come from.

Unfortunately, recent state and federal cuts have placed even greater strain on food banks. The USDA cut more than 553,000 pounds of food that would have gone to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, while Ohio’s new state budget reduced food bank funding from $32.5 million to $24.5 million—far below what advocates said was needed.

I have consistently advocated for increased funding for food banks and voted against last year’s state budget for many reasons, including its failure to adequately support hunger relief efforts. At a time when grocery prices remain high and SNAP benefits face additional cuts, we should be strengthening our safety net—not weakening it.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank serves more than 424,000 neighbors across six counties. They are doing extraordinary work. It’s our responsibility to ensure they have the resources they need.
