Despite the heavy rainfall our community has experienced recently, the Village of Parma is pleased to report that the sewer system upgrades completed over the past year and a half performed exactly as intended. These improvements allowed the system to effectively handle the increased volume of water, helping to prevent additional issues for residents. Our backup systems also proved reliable—when an extended power outage occurred on South Union Street, the lift station’s generator immediately activated, ensuring uninterrupted operation. While we can’t control the weather, these proactive investments are making a real difference in protecting our community.

One issue we did uncover, however, is that one of our pump stations was not moving water as efficiently as designed. Our technicians found it was being hindered by a large buildup of so-called “flushable wipes,” which were limiting the pump’s ability to function properly. This serves as a friendly reminder that while these wipes may be labeled “flushable,” they are not biodegradable and do not break down like toilet paper. Across the country, they have caused major failures and costly damage in municipal sewer systems. We ask all residents to please avoid flushing these items. While not pleasant to see, the photos we’ve shared reflect exactly what our crews were dealing with as they worked to clear the system during this week’s storms.

The village of Parma has a new, hard working DPW truck! We are getting the decals applied and will have photos soon! It was purchased using investment funds, so no cost to village tax payers!
We are looking to christen it was a name!
