Part 3- What does "Federal Inmate" really mean?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the term "federal inmate" automatically means someone is more dangerous than everyone else in jail. That's simply not true.

"Federal" refers to who has jurisdiction over the case—not the person's level of danger. Federal detainees may be in custody for a wide range of alleged offenses, including immigration matters, crimes committed on federal land, financial crimes, drug trafficking, weapons violations, probation violations, and other federal offenses.

Just like everyone else in the jail, federal detainees are individually assessed and housed according to their classification, security level, and facility policies.

Understanding the difference between jurisdiction and security classification helps separate fact from fiction.

Over the next 4 weeks, we'll be sharing one post each week that takes a closer look at how the county jail operates, who is housed there, and the safety measures that help protect our staff, inmates, and our community.

⭐️Happy Independence Day Iron County!!⭐️

This week marked an important milestone as the final beam was placed on the new Iron County Correctional Facility.

This facility will provide space for valuable educational and vocational programs that help individuals to build practical skills and prepare for a successful return to the community.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we're especially grateful for the freedoms we enjoy and for the opportunity to invest in a stronger future.

Thank You, Cedar City! 💧

We want to extend our sincere thanks to our residents, businesses, schools, churches, and parks for answering our call to conserve water during this critical time.

Your willingness to turn off outside watering and reduce water use helped protect our water system while Rocky Mountain Power's Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) caused power disruptions that impacted our water wells.

Your efforts helped ensure that water remained available for essential household needs, firefighting, and emergency services while also allowing the City to keep our water storage tanks full. This is a great example of our community working together to keep Cedar City safe.

We truly appreciate your cooperation, patience, and commitment to helping your neighbors. Every gallon saved made a difference.

As a reminder, Cedar City Ordinance 37-7-1 prohibits outdoor watering between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Watering outside of these hours helps conserve water, reduces strain on the water system, and allows the City's water storage tanks to refill.
