Pasadena School Board Accepts $2 Million Mamba and Mambacita Donation to Rebuild John Muir Softball Field

On Thursday evening the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education accepted a $2 million donation from the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation — established by Vanessa Bryant in memory of her husband, Kobe Bryant, and daughter Gianna Bryant — to replace the John Muir High School varsity softball field with a state-of-the-art synthetic turf system.

In 2026 alone, at least 13 Black women have been murdered by intimate partner violence in the United States.

Gladys Johnson, 22. Bianca Huntley, 34. Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38. Qualeisha Barnes, 36. Imani Dia Smith, 26. Dr. Cerina Fairfax, 49. Ashanti Allen, 23. Daneshia Heller, 30. Ashlee Jenae, 31. Teonia Stokes, 22. Raven Edwards. Gabryel Ayers, 26. Victoria Alexander, 38.

They were mothers. Students. A vice mayor weeks from running for Congress. A Broadway star. A dentist. A nurse. They were pregnant. They were building futures. They were someone’s daughter, sister, friend.

And these are only the names that made the news.

Black women are 3x more likely to be killed by men than white women. For Black women, homicide is one of the leading causes of death during pregnancy. This is not a moment. This is a crisis.

Good morning, with hearts full of love and hope, let's rise up to honor the memories of the African American women whose lives were tragically cut short by domestic violence in the past month, leaving behind grieving children, families, and communities. This is a testament to the stats of domestic violence among African American women.

Fact: the Black women experience domestic violence at a rate 35% higher than White women. They are also more likely to be killed by their intimate partner. 40% of Black men have experienced some form of intimate partner.

Your voice matters in this pursuit of protection and peace. Let's transform our sorrow into determination and shine a light on this critical issue, because domestic violence thrives in darkness but retreats in the face of awareness.

Every individual deserves a life free from fear, shame, and isolation a life where love is not tainted by control, isolation, criticism, threats, or violence.

If you're experiencing abuse, know that there are signs to look out for isolating you from family and friends, blaming, threats, financial, verbal abuse, gaslighting. Resources and help is available to support you.

Your voice is powerful; speak up, speak out, and reach out to those who can help. Asking for help is a testament to your strength, and it's the first step toward safety and healing.

For those who are causing harm, know that there is help available, and seeking it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Taking accountability is the first step to your healing. Reach out for help‼️

Let's stand together as a community to uplift each other and reject violence in our homes, fostering a culture of love, respect, and peace. This is a call to action.

Shepherd's Door is transforming lives. Today was a truly exceptional day. The Survive to Thrive Award Luncheon was a highly inspiring event. We take great pride in all the women who are prepared to assert their strength and confidence. Special thanks to Host Bonnie Hall and Joanna Mills for their outstanding contributions.
