If you didn't watch or listening to the game last night; watch this on the field interview with Coach. "Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that, upon other fields, on other days, will bear the fruits of victory"
Regardless of the score ending in a W for Petal; it was the path getting there that is going to be most impactful. Listening to Coach Marcus Boyles words - demonstrates why coaching is so meaningful in the lives of our youth - regardless of the score at any particular time. Time in sports and other activities and competing as a team - helps develops the character of our future generations, men and women.

I believe that maintaining the City of Petal in a single, unified Senate district provides critical benefits across representation, civic cohesion, and election administration
The Mississippi Legislature will hold public hearings across the state to redraw our State Senate district maps, and the decisions made right now will shape our local representation, community voice, and legislative priorities for years to come. I've attached current and historical district maps. In 2025, the entire City of Petal was consolidated into one district whereas prior to that change the City of Petal was split across two districts. I strongly support keeping our City of Petal wholly within District 42. I hope the final approved State Senate District map moving forward has the City of Petal in one Senate District.
State lawmakers are hosting eight public hearings throughout August and September before final maps are drafted, giving us a direct opportunity to provide input to our state leadership. I know that our current Senator Don Hartness is already engaging and working to keep the entire City of Petal within District 42 for our benefit but we need to get out and voice our opinion to the State Leadership.
Upcoming Local Hearing Details:
-Date: Thursday, September 17, 2026
-Time: 6:00 PM
-Location: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Hattiesburg Campus (Specific building/room details to be published soon)
Whether your focus is local infrastructure, public services, economic growth, or neighborhood representation, public input directly influences how community boundaries are drawn.
Please mark your calendars, plan to attend, and share this update with neighbors across Ward 5 so Petal is strongly represented.

I wanted to provide an updated economic sales tax revenue snapshot for the City of Petal from both our Regular Retail Tax stream and our Tourism/Parks/Recreation Tax (revenue from sales of food at restaurants/bars/hot food sales places within the city {our 3% tax approved by voters in 2021}).
One of the primary legislative responsibilities that the City Board has is to pass a budget for the City. It helps to have a solid understanding of our revenue streams, how we got there, and incorporate economic development. Sales tax revenue and property tax revenue make up the vast majority of our available funding to allocate in our budget. Steady and consistent growth is the key to minimizing the tax burden upon citizens (you and me).
Reviewing the charts below:
--Our general tax revenue collection had a general 6% decrease over the same time frame as last year. The previous year in FY2025 our Sales tax revenue was basically flat from FY2024.
-- Our tax supporting our Tourism/Parks/Recreation basically stabilized/flattened after several years of explosive growth (Note: The City has a large deposit in March due to DOR conducting an audit which capture some previous non-collected taxes).
What does this mean? It means during budget season we must be diligent, responsible, and live within our means (like you do at your own house) while taking care of the City team members that make our City successful.

It's budget season. One of the products of the budget process is the approval of the millage rates. Jason Camp, MS Local Gov Guy has a great explanation of how milage rates impacts you (besides your property taxes) when he explains how your annual car tag is calculated. (I'd recommend tagging his FB page since he provides a lot of great information about Cities and local government functions)
Every dollar you pay in taxes/fees to the government should be accounted for and spent wisely in good stewardship. Stay informed and involved. It's your money.
The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor also has a report that provides another view of how your tags are calculated with some examples: A Review of Car Tag Prices across Mississippi, that is located here: https://www.osa.ms.gov/sites/default/files/osa/files/reports/25A%20Review%20of%20Car%20Tag%20Prices%20Across%20Mississippi.pdf
