Press Release

June 1, 2026

On May 31, 2026, Investigators, with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, arrested John Francis Buhring, III, 26 years of age, from Hoover, AL, for Commercial Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Auto Burglary. The charges stem from an investigation into a Jackson County Fire Truck being stolen from the Old Americus Fire Station, which had been broken into. A local resident alerted the Sheriff’s Office of the fire truck being stolen and to Buhring breaking into an automobile in the area also. Buhring was taken into custody after returning the fire truck to the station and was walking in the area. Buhring is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center pending an initial appearance in County Court.

Today, Sheriff John Ledbetter had the opportunity to join the Jackson-George Regional Library System at Trent Lott International Airport for another exciting Fly Into Reading Friday event!

Children and families enjoyed learning about the importance of reading and education. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office was proud to be part of the event, bringing our MRAP, a patrol unit, and our helicopter for attendees to see up close.

Events like these provide a wonderful opportunity to connect with our community, encourage a love of reading, and give young people a chance to learn more about the men and women who serve and protect Jackson County.

A special thank you to the Jackson-George Regional Library System, Trent Lott International Airport, and everyone who helped make today's event a success!

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to those who gave their lives protecting the freedoms we enjoy each day, and we keep their families and loved ones in our thoughts.

May we always remember that freedom is never free.
