Our firefighters on the east side wrapped up on our hose bundles and extended attack training sessions this month. A few of our Vancleave firefighters also snuck in a quick session on initial incident operations and hose deployments.

Thanks to all of our firefighters for their efforts in training this month. Your dedication to learning and practice help keeps us ready to respond for the real world incidents!

Congratulations to LT Matthew Meek for earning his Fire Inspector certification on campus at the MS State Fire Academy this week! The new hybrid format of this course requires two weeks of self-study followed up with a week on campus for skills and certification testing. Job well done!

Fire inspectors ensure that buildings comply with fire codes, enforce safety standards, determine permit requirements, conduct thorough inspections, calculate safe occupancy loads, and document their findings. Good luck on your finals today!

Mutual Aid Support – Moss Point Fire Department

Jackson County Fire Protection provided manpower and air truck support to the Moss Point Fire Department during a structure fire on First Street tonight.

We’re proud to assist our neighboring departments and provide support when called upon. Strong mutual aid partnerships help keep our communities safer.

The request for assistance came in at approximately 7:00 PM.

Evening Thunderstorms Cause Damage Across Jackson County

A strong storm cell moved through Jackson County this evening, bringing damaging straight-line winds and thunderstorms to portions of the county.

Several outbuildings sustained damage, and numerous trees were reported down in the Vancleave and Hurley areas.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

The damage appears to be associated with straight-line winds produced by the thunderstorms. Jackson County Fire Protection crews continue to monitor the affected areas and respond as needed.

Residents are reminded to use caution while traveling, especially in areas where trees or power lines may be down.

Bayou Cumbest Wildfire Update

Jackson County Fire Protection continues to assist the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, and other agencies as crews work to establish, reinforce, and maintain containment lines around the Bayou Cumbest wildfire.

This afternoon’s thunderstorms brought some much-needed rainfall to the area. However, the increased moisture has also caused smoke to linger in and around the affected areas.

Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when traveling through southeastern Jackson County, particularly along US-90, MS-63, MS-611, and surrounding roadways. Reduced visibility may occur due to lingering smoke.

The fire is currently estimated at approximately 1,000 acres. Crews will continue working to reinforce and strengthen containment lines.

Residents are reminded that flare-ups and spot fires can be normal within established containment areas as crews continue operations. However, if you observe fire activity outside the containment areas or anything that appears concerning, please report it so it can be investigated.

We appreciate the continued cooperation and support of our community as forestry crews work to contain this wildfire.

Bayou Cumbest Wildfire Update

The Bayou Cumbest wildfire continues to impact the area, with the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Alabama Forestry Commission, and Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge working together with multiple dozers to establish and strengthen containment lines.

Jackson County Fire Protection crews have evacuated and assessed approximately 10 homes that were threatened by the fire. At this time, no structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported.

The fire is currently estimated to be several hundred acres, with a more accurate acreage estimate to follow as crews continue their work.

🌫️ Smoke Advisory: Smoke is expected to linger throughout the area overnight and into tomorrow. Motorists should use extreme caution, as smoke may reduce visibility along area roadways.

🔥 Flare-ups and spot fires: Residents may see flare-ups or spot fires within the containment area. These can be a normal part of wildfire behavior as crews work to contain the fire. If you see an area that appears to be outside the containment lines or is otherwise concerning, please report it so fire crews can investigate.

‼️🚨 EMERGENCY ALERT — WOODS FIRE 🚨‼️

The Jackson County Office of Emergency Services is currently on scene of a woods fire in the Bayou Cumbest–Pecan area of Jackson County.

Residents in the affected area are strongly urged to evacuate as a precaution while emergency crews work to bring the fire under control.

⚠️ Everyone is asked to stay out of the affected area until further notice to allow emergency personnel to safely respond and work to bring the fire under control.

📍 Please refer to the attached map below for the affected area.

Keeping unnecessary traffic out of the area is critical to providing firefighters, emergency vehicles and other responding agencies clear and unrestricted access to safely conduct operations.

Residents should remain alert and follow instructions from emergency personnel. Additional information will be provided as conditions change.

Please avoid the area and allow emergency crews the space they need to work safely.

Thunderstorm Impacts Big Point Community

At approximately 4:30 p.m. today, a strong thunderstorm moved through the Big Point community, producing damaging straight-line winds estimated by the National Weather Service at 60–65 mph.

Trees and tree limbs were reported down along Big Point Road from Highway 63 to Highway 613, with several roadways impacted by downed trees, limbs, and power lines.

A residence on Sam Kirkwood Road was damaged after a tree fell onto the home. A shed on Old Madison Road was also destroyed by fire during the storm.

Jackson County Fire Protection responded to the structure fire and storm-related hazards, working alongside the Jackson County Road Department to address the fire, downed trees, and clear affected roadways.
