🇺🇸 Keeping California Veterans Informed

As a proud member of the VFW National Legislative Committee, I am committed to keeping our District and Department informed on legislation that directly impacts veterans, their families, and survivors. California has an awesome Legislative Team. Here’s a more detailed look at key bills currently moving through the California Legislature:

🔹 SB 1407 (VFW Co-Sponsor) – Would significantly expand tax relief by increasing the exemption on military retirement and Survivor Benefit Plan income from $20,000 to $80,000, adjust income limits for inflation, and extend the benefit through 2037. This is a major win for retirees and surviving spouses. (Hearing April 27)

🔹 Property Tax Relief for Veterans

* SB 888 / SB 56 – Excludes VA disability compensation from income calculations, helping more disabled veterans qualify for property tax exemptions
* SB 623 / ACA 5 / SCA 4 – Allows veterans to combine homeowners and veterans exemptions, potentially increasing overall tax relief
* SB 296 / AB 2022 – Expands eligibility for disabled veteran homeowners and surviving spouses

🔹 Education & Transition Support

* AB 2203 / AB 2794 – Expands GI Bill access and priority registration for veterans and dependents
* AB 264 – Removes restrictions so dependents can receive both state and federal education benefits

🔹 Access to Services

* AB 1638 / AB 2219 – Strengthens County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO) programs, staffing, and accountability
* AB 2645 – Brings DMV services directly to veterans homes
* AB 2467 – Eases school enrollment for military families during transfers

🔹 Quality of Life & Recognition

* AB 1702 – Expands free state park access to more veterans
* AB 1765 – Increases eligibility for vehicle fee waivers for disabled veterans
* SB 1040 – Establishes matching funds for veterans cemetery maintenance

🔹 Healthcare & Workforce

* AB 1616 – Supports research into non-narcotic PTSD treatments
* AB 1775 – Expands professional licensing opportunities for veterans

📍 Many of these bills are currently in Appropriations Committees or scheduled for hearings, meaning decisions are happening now.

We will continue to monitor, advocate, and provide updates as these bills move forward.

Informed veterans are empowered veterans—and your voice matters.
