At 79 years young, Roger Fonnest walked 22 miles to raise awareness of Veterans Su***de. I was honored to be able to join him today for his last 2 miles. Roger is inspirational and determined to shine light on the statistic that 22 veterans commit su***de every day.

The walk ended at the Dunton Inn and while I was there, it was fitting that we presented them with a New York State Senate Empire Award. This award is the highest honor granted by the State Senate to recognize local businesses and organizations that demonstrate excellence, create local impact, and contribute significantly to their communities.

Congratulations to the Dunton Inn, and thank you to Roger for being such an inspiration!

Every 13 minutes, someone’s life is taken too soon by an overdose. This is a harrowing statistic for America, which is why preparedness and training with Narcan is vital. Last night at South Country Library, members of the community were able to hear from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office and learn how to dispense Narcan to help reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Familiarizing yourself with this medical device is quick, easy, and might just save a life in those critical moments before first responders arrive.

This Saturday at 11am, come join Roger Fonnest for the 5th Annual 22 mile walk for Veteran Su***de Awareness. Afterwards at the Dunton Inn in East Patchogue there will be live bands, a pig roast, raffles and more. Tragically, 22 veterans die by su***de every day, and events like this bring awareness and funding to programs that save veterans' lives. Show your support; our veterans deserve it!

Today in Albany, I was deeply honored to induct John Harry Kellers into the NYS Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Mr. Kellers took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and was a highly decorated World War II veteran. I was lucky enough to celebrate his 100th birthday with him last summer in East Patchogue prior to his passing in December. His son, Matthew, accepted this award on his behalf. Mr. Kellers represented the best of this country. His contributions, both in and out of uniform deserve our eternal respect and admiration.
