At our recent Community Listening Session in the Second Ward, residents spoke clearly about one issue: speeding in residential neighborhoods.

Less than 24 hours later, Paterson Police Traffic Officers were back in the Second Ward conducting enforcement and issuing summonses to drivers violating the speed limit.

Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Slow down, stay alert, and drive responsibly; especially in neighborhoods where families, children, and pedestrians are present.

Our officers will continue proactive enforcement efforts across the city to help keep Paterson’s streets safe for everyone.

Today, the Paterson Police Department remembers Sergeant Enrico “Rick” Venditte, who was killed in the line of duty on this day in 2001.

A dedicated 16-year veteran of the department, Sgt. Venditte was tragically ambushed while conducting a property check. Twenty-five years later, his courage, commitment to service, and sacrifice continue to be remembered by those who served alongside him and the community he protected.

Today, the Paterson Police Department solemnly marked the 25th anniversary of the line of duty death of Sergeant Enrico Venditte. In honor of his legacy, Sergeant Venditte’s photo was placed in the Patrol Sergeant’s Office during a heartfelt ceremony attended by the Venditte family.

Though 25 years have passed, Sergeant Venditte’s memory remains forever in the hearts and minds of the PPD family. His dedication and service to the city of Paterson will never be forgotten. We extend our sincere gratitude to the retired and active members who were assigned to investigate this tragic incident, and to retired Chief Lawrence Sp****la, who was in command on that terrible day, for their leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment during one of our department’s darkest moments.

To the Venditte family, please know that the Paterson Police Department stands with you today and always. Sergeant Venditte will forever remain part of our family, and his dedication will continue to inspire generations of officers to come. We will never forget.
