Putnam Lake Fire Department

Putnam Lake Fire Department Putnam Lake Fire Department provides fire and EMS protection in the Town of Patterson NY fire district #2. One of those men were Kenneth A. Peloso, M.D.

History

In the early 1930s when the newspaper, Daily Mirror, developed Putnam Lake, the Patterson Fire Department answered all calls in the area. Several years later a dozen men from Putnam Lake joined the Patterson Fire Department. Hall, now deceased, used his own car equipped with brooms and shovels to fight any kind of fire until the Patterson Fire Department arrived. It was those men who conv

inced the town board in Patterson to let them have their 1928 Dodge Chemical truck. It was finally agreed that the men from Putnam Lake may buy the Truck for the price of $1.00. These men formed their own fire department. They called themselves The Putnam Lake Firemans Association. The Dodge truck was then garaged in the shed on the property of the Putnam Lake Community Council on Haviland Drive, which today it the town-owned Park. In the 1940's an electric siren was installed on the roof of a restaurant called the Putnam Lake Inn. All Fire calls were answered by the bar tender on telephone number 947. The siren was then set in motion; men responding were then notified where the call was located. In the spring of 1948, a One Floor, two bay fire station at the corner of Fairfield and Haviland Drives were first occupied. The Property consisted of three lots which was generously donated the previous year by the late Dr. Joseph L. Late in 1951 the Second floor was added. Also in the 1950's Mr. Kenneth A. Hall moved into the firehouse as the dispatcher. At this time the association had four sirens and six call boxes. The telephone system consisted of five phones, one in each of the officers homes and one in the fire house. Today we have personal pagers to alert the members of any emergency call, two-way radios in each truck in addition to the chiefs and captains personal vehicles. All of which are in connection with the Putnam 911 dispatch center, in Carmel, NY. We are also members of the Putnam County mutual aid pact 1. Our Firehouse is currently located at the intersection of Fairfield Drive and Haviland Drive. With seven bays, two offices, and a large meeting room upstairs. Our department has come along way from the shed it once was. While the buildings may have changed over the years the mission of the Putnam Lake Fire Department has not. We are all still here to serve and protect the community in which we all reside.

Today, we pause to honor and remember Deputy Chief Daniel O’Connell, a proud member of the Putnam Lake Fire Department whose dedication, heart, and steady presence left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of serving beside him.

Daniel embodied the true spirit of the fire service—reliable, selfless, and always willing to step forward when others needed him most. He wasn’t just a firefighter; he was a friend, a mentor, and a quiet force of strength within our community.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan and his family, who were the center of his world and the source of his greatest pride. Their strength and grace reflect the same spirit Daniel carried with him throughout his life of service.

His legacy lives on in the stories we share, the lessons he taught, and the countless moments where his presence made our department stronger and our community safer. Though he may no longer stand beside us, his spirit remains woven into the fabric of Putnam Lake Fire Department.

It's with our deepest condolences the Putnam Lake Fire Department announces the passing of life member and past Chief Donald Mill Sr.

Donald joined Putnam Lake Fire Department in 1969, and served through all the ranks including Chief from 1975-1976. With honor and gratitude, we remember his contributions to our department and our community.

Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

Per his wishes, there will be no services scheduled.

ATTENTION!! SANTA IS ON THE ROAD!!!!!!!

Santa is coming around passing out candy canes. Listen for the sirens so you can come say hi and get a candy cane! 🎄🎅🏼
Just a few reminders:

• We do not have a set street or time schedule, we do our best to go to every street within our district that we can navigate the trucks through.

• Listen for the sirens to come outside. Please, refrain from jumping into the street. The trucks will come to a complete stop when we see you or your children outside. Please wait until we fully stop to approach the truck.

• We will still be responding to emergencies in the during this event so please be patient if there are delays.

• We will be leaving the firehouse at 10am and will be working our away around. Please be patient as it takes time to make our way around the lake and to navigate tight roads.

We will be collecting “Toys for Tots” during the event! Please have all presents unwrapped!

We are excited to see you all! 🎄🎄
