The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office would like to provide the following update about the recent officer involved shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez on April 7th in the city of Patterson.

• After receiving treatment at a local hospital, Hernandez was released into the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

• The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office provided a courtesy hold for Hernandez at the Public Safety Center on the evening of Monday, April 13.

• On the morning of April 14, Hernandez was transported by federal officers to Sacramento to appear before a United States Magistrate Judge.

• Hernandez was held to answer for a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 111(b): assaulting, resisting, and impeding federal officers while engaged in official duties with a dangerous or deadly weapon.

• Hernandez is in federal custody and no longer being housed in the Stanislaus County Jail.

• Officers with City of Turlock - Police Department conducted a traffic stop involving Hernandez on April 3, 2026. Family members have alleged that Turlock Police Department notified ICE of the traffic stop; however, no such notification was made. The Turlock Police Department had no involvement in this investigation before, during, or after the April 7 incident.

• This case continues to be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the lead agency with the assistance of the Sheriff's Office.

For more detailed information, here is a link to the press release U.S. Attorney's Office provided earlier this afternoon: https://www.justice.gov/usao-edca/pr/illegal-alien-el-salvador-charged-assault-federal-officer-deadly-weapon.

Federal Officer Involved Shooting Reported in Patterson

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., Stanislaus County dispatchers received a report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers regarding an officer-involved shooting in the area of Sperry Avenue and Interstate 5 in Patterson. Deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded to the scene and assisted in securing the area by blocking roadways. Fire and paramedic personnel also responded to provide medical assistance.

No deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office were injured or involved in the shooting.
Because this incident involves a federal agency and does not involve any local law enforcement as involved parties, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has assumed primary responsibility for the investigation. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit will be conducting an investigation. The closure of the Interstate 5 on and off ramps at Sperry Avenue remains in effect and there is currently no estimated time for reopening. We will provide an update once the road closures have been lifted and the ramps are reopened.

We are aware of the information released by Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons; however, we have no further details to provide regarding our involvement at this time. All media inquiries will be handled by the FBI.

Thank you to the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans for assisting with road closures.

Man Booked for Possession of Methamphetamine

On March 16, 2026, a motor deputy with Patterson Police Services conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle on Sperry Avenue for speeding and failing to yield at a flashing red signal light.

Upon contact with the driver, 44-year-old Shaun Wheeling of Patterson, the deputy determined the individual did not possess a valid driver’s license. The deputy also observed that the vehicle’s VIN plate and registration sticker appeared to have been intentionally scratched off. Based on these observations Wheeling was detained pending further investigation.

During a search for officer safety, the deputy located about four ounces of substance in Wheeling’s possession, which he stated was methamphetamine. It was later determined to be methamphetamine, and Wheeling was arrested and booked for violation of California Health and Safety Code §11378 (Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale). Due to his possession of over 100 grams of a substance he admitted to being methamphetamine, and based on the quantity of the substance along with the large amount of currency in his possession, the individual was booked for possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of sales.

On March 17, 2026, deputies executed a search warrant at the residence of Wheeling. During the search, deputies located additional quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl, which were seized as evidence.
