Retired Marine One Makes a Memorable Final Stop

NAS Patuxent River, Md. – A retired, de-militarized and restored VH-3D Marine One was inducted into the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, College Station, Texas in June. The library and museum, located within the Texas A&M University campus, welcomed Presidential Helicopters Program Office members, Bush family members, donors and supporters to the grand opening of a new pavilion that now houses the retired Marine One.

A Vintage Lessons Learned from Grampaw Pettibone

During night operations, in an effort to take a break and rest while waiting for the arrival of an F/A- 18C to land and proceed to his “hot brake” check area prior to the refueling pits, a plane captain/hot brake checker laid down on the centerline of the taxiway and fell asleep. As the Hornet taxied to the hot brake check area the pilot’s attention was diverted from the taxiway because he was unable to see the illuminated taxi wands where the hot brake checker usually stands. His attention was on the hangar, the refueling pits and the sides of the taxiway looking for the hot brake checker.

Checkout Gramps from Yesteryear: May-June 2001
An AV-8B Harrier was engaged in practice close air support operations. On a previous flight that day, the pilot completed the bombing exercise without any sign of bird activity in the area. However, as he was pulling up off target after a run on the second flight, he observed a bird dead ahead of his aircraft, seemingly destined to impact his windscreen.
