The Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department (PSGVFD) was formed in 1979. The first fire station was located on Paul Smith’s College’s campus next to the maintenance building on the East side. It was a one-story

shed with little in it; there was just enough room for the fire truck. As the area grew so did the fire service. Soon the garage the fire department utilized was no longer sufficient for the fire department to conduct their trainings, meetings, and their day-to-day business. So with much help from friends, neighbors and the volunteers the construction of a new firehouse began. In November of 1998, the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Fire Department opened the new station's doors and the department has been at home on Rt 86 since.

07/12/2026

7-12-26: At 02:11 PSGVFD was requested by Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department Inc. To establish a landing zone for a helicopter. They had a patient involved in an ATV accident. Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad transported the patient from the scene to the landing zone. PSG members established the landing zone at the potato field on County Route 60. We responded with E-183, MISC-387, MISC-388, and 9 members. All PSG units were back in service at 03:49.

07/09/2026

7-6-26: At 06:50 PSGVFD was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at Paul Smiths College, Joan Weil Student Center. Members investigated the cause of the alarm and deemed it to be caused by an alarm malfunction. We responded with E-183, QUINT-184, and 7 members. All PSG units were back in service at 07:28.

7-3-26: At 17:02 PSGVFD was dispatched to a water rescue on Osgood Pond. Members got the patients out of the water and transported to EMS. We responded with MISC-387, MISC-388, MARINE-2, HEAVY RESCUE-189, and 12 members.

7-3-26: At 17:57 PSGVFD responded to Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department Inc. With manpower and swift water trained personnel. For a water rescue. Three kayakers stranded in the rapids, unable to cross the river. We responded with MISC-388, MARINE-3, HEAVY RESCUE-189, and 13 members. All PSG units were back in service from both calls at 20:27.

PSGVFD has responded to a total of 123 calls so far this year. Thank you to all of our Mutual Aid departments, as well as our members.
