PASSING OF FIREFIGHTER/ CHAPLIN CHARLES SNYDER

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of one of our own. Firefighter Charles “Chip” Snyder went home to be with the Lord.

Chip was a proud 50-year member of our department — a true staple around the station and our go-to handyman who could fix just about anything.

His dedication, knowledge, and presence were irreplaceable, and his passing leaves a hole in our department that will be very difficult to fill.

Chip, we thank you for your decades of service to our department, our community, and the residents of East Greenwich. Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here. 🙏

To Susan, Caleb, and Charlie — our hearts are with you. We are forever grateful for sharing Chip with us, and for your understanding and support every time he answered the call to protect others. Your sacrifice did not go unnoticed.

Chip will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on in every call we answer and every life we protect.

🔥 An extremely large brush fire is burning in West Deptford Twp. in the area of Sunoco Refinery property.

💨 Smoke plumes and fallen ash are reported as far south and east as Glassboro, Washington Twp., Franklin Twp. and beyond.

🚨 Onlookers are urged to stay out of the area! The amount of unnecessary vehicle and pedestrian traffic near the fire scene is hindering the emergency response and fire suppression efforts.

🚒 A vast number of resources throughout Gloucester County are on the scene or responding, fighting the fire and protecting structures. Multiple Fire Boats from both sides of the Delaware and teams from New Jersey Forest Fire Service are also assisting.

📣 Conditions are subject to change or worsen due to high winds or fire conditions.

⚠️ Those with health or breathing problems are urged to stay indoors or shut windows, if you are sensitive to smoke.

Today at approximately 5:30am there were reports of a gas odor in the Billingsport section of town. The Department responded and investigated the odor. An odor was present, local industries were contacted to try and locate the source of the odor. Wind direction was out of the North East, which does not support the odor coming from our local industries. It is believed to have come across from across the river. We are continuing to try and locate the source of the odor.
