Pawling Historical Society

Pawling Historical Society The Pawling Historical Society is dedicated to bringing the past rich heritage of the Pawling area.

All three sites are on the National Register of Historic Places:

The John Kane House:
George Washington's headquarters during the fall of 1778, focuses on life styles of the area from 1740-1820. A special room is also devoted to memorabilia of Lowell Thomas, Pawling's famous broadcaster. The Oblong Meeting House:
Built in 1764, is a rare example of the strong Quaker influence in the community dur

ing the 18th and 19th centuries. The first effective action against slavery was taken here in 1767. It was occupied as a hospital in 1778 by Revolutionary soldiers, some of whom are buried across the road. Akin Free Library:
The Historical Society Museum, located in the Akin Free Library contains many interesting artifacts from the early days on Quaker Hill. Also located in this building is the Olive Gunnison National History Museum, a popular attraction for both young and old.

In digitizing our paper archives I came across these discharge papers from the AAF Convalescent Hospital. With just a little bit of digging, I was able to find the email address of the soldier's granddaughter and emailed her a PDF of the papers.

I've compiled a spreadsheet of Dutchess County (including Putnam County at the time) Regiments of soldiers during the American Revolution. Almost 4,700 patriots fought for independence.

Considering that only one third of the population wished to separate from English rule, means that some 14,000+ people lived in these two counties.

I recognize many names still in the area today, both people and places named after the families: Van Wyck, Brinkerhoff, Dutcher, Utter, Slocum, Swartout, Haviland, Ketcham, & Hopkins to name a few.

We had several groups of visitors this past Saturday at the Kane House. One group the father said; "My house is old. It doesn't have air conditioning. It was built in1988." Another group a gentleman said; "Our friend here is visiting from Rome, Italy." I guess "Old" is relative.

While not directly Pawling related, I am certain many Pawling homes had a copy of this 50-page booklet during WWII.

A new edition to our Revolutionary War room! Any idea on whose shadow is here on the left? 🤔
That’s George Washington! Can you believe he stood 6 feet 2 inches? That may not seem unreasonable nowadays but the shadow on the right displays the height of the average male at the time standing at just 5 foot 5 inches. 😲 Washington’s height gave him a commanding presence while serving as Commander-in-Chief. 🇺🇸
