January 12, 1939 - Fritz Gamage dies. A graduate of the Pawling School, Fritz served as the School’s second headmaster from 1932 to 1935. His father was our founding headmaster, Dr. Gamage.

November 5, 1908 - A date that would forever be known as Founders’ Day, when Dr. Gamage announced a $100,000 gift from George Cluett in memory of his son, one of Dr. Gamage’s former students from St. Paul’s. The students walked from Dutcher House to the site of the current campus to mark the occasion. This article from the Pawling School Weekly’s 11/9/32 issue gives a recap of that year's Founders’ Day, as Dr. Gamage reflected on the life of Alfonzo Cluett.

November 2, 1948 - President Truman defeats New York Governor Thomas Dewey in the presidential election. It was projected that Dewey would win - the Chicago Tribune even published an early edition on election night with the false headline “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.”

September 30, 1928 - Elie Wiesel is born. He became a best-selling author and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his writings based on his time in concentration camps during the Holocaust. He died in 2016 at the age of 87.

September 18, 1993 - The foot bridge over Route 22 is dedicated. It is given as a gift of the Parents of the Class of 1991 as a safe crossing connecting the main part of campus to the athletic fields. Let us know who you can spot in the uncaptioned photo!

September 11, 1918 - The Boston Red Sox win the World Series - then go through an 86 year drought. The World Series was played entirely in the month of September in 1918 as the World War I “Work or Fight” order meant the regular season was forced to end September 1st.
