This morning, Sheriff Lang and Dispatcher Nancy spent several hours at the Pawnee City School with Kindergarten-5th-grade students, distributing educational materials and talking about what the Sheriff and Deputies do to serve and protect Pawnee County. Pre-school came last week to get their goodies to take with them on their last day.

These students were asked questions regarding the Sheriff and Deputies, 911, addresses, and phone numbers, among other things. Students were also allowed to ask the Sheriff questions. The kids were very inquisitive and had some great questions.

Thank you, Pawnee City School, for allowing us to share our information with the kids.

Each student was encouraged to share the bag they received with their parents.

We hope all the students have a safe and fun summer.

In a short time span, our office has had to euthanize 2 dogs, take them to a Vetrinarian, who will decapitate them and have the heads sent to the University of Nebraska to do the testing for rabies. This testing is done on the animal's brain. Do you want that to happen to your dog?

If your pet bites or causes an abrasion on someone, and you cannot provide proof of rabies vaccination, that is what will happen.

Rabies vaccination is required by State Statute.

Nebraska Revised Statutes 71-4402 tells us to have our pets vaccinated against rabies
Vaccination against rabies; required; vaccine; sales.

(1) Every domestic animal in the State of Nebraska shall be vaccinated against rabies with a licensed vaccine and revaccinated at intervals specified by rules and regulations adopted and promulgated by the department. Young domestic animals shall be initially vaccinated at the age specified in such rules and regulations. Unvaccinated domestic animals acquired or moved into the State of Nebraska shall be vaccinated within thirty days after purchase or arrival unless under the age for initial vaccination.

(2) The rabies vaccine used to vaccinate domestic animals pursuant to this section shall be sold only to licensed veterinarians.

This violation is a class V misdemeanor. That might not seem like a big deal to you, but when it comes to someone (especially a child) being bitten and having to undergo a series of shots because you didn't vaccinate your pet, or cannot show proof, it's a big deal to the person that was bitten.

Strong to severe storm development is expected in southeast Nebraska this afternoon into the evening. The primary hazard will be isolated hail (up to 2") with damaging wind gusts (up to 70 mph) and a brief tornado also possible.

We have had several reports the last couple days of suspected arson around Dubois and today received a fire call near Pawnee City also suspected arson. If you have any information or see anything suspicious contact PCSO @ 402-852-2969 or call 911. Obtain a vehicle description and license plate if possible. Possible vehicle description is tan or cream colored pick up. Thanks all we have at this time so any tips could be extremely helpful even if you don’t think it matters.
