Back in November, former PSFR Fire Chief Les Hill passed away.

This week, he is being memorialized at the Texas Emergency Management Conference as part of the First Responders Memorial. In addition to his dedicated service to Payne Springs Fire Rescue, Les also served the community for several years through ETMC.

Chief Hill devoted much of his life to helping others, and his service and leadership will not be forgotten. Please keep his family, friends, and former coworkers in your thoughts as we honor his memory.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the volunteers of PSFR responded to two incidents on Cedar Creek Lake. Both of these situations could have had a tragic outcome if the individuals involved hadn’t been wearing life jackets.

πŸ”Ή Saturday Afternoon: Volunteers responded to the Pinnacle Club area for an unconscious individual on a boat. Two people on a tube being pulled behind a boat had accidentally hit heads, knocking one unconscious. Thanks to their life jacket, the unconscious individual stayed safely on top of the water until the boat could return and pull them out. The patient was transported by EMS.

πŸ”Ή Sunday Afternoon: Crews were alerted to the Bear Creek Drive area for a wakeboarder who suffered a medical emergency and went down in the water. Those on the boat explicitly stated there would have been no chance of saving him if he hadn’t been wearing a life jacket. He was also transported by EMS.

We are incredibly grateful that both of these individuals are still with us today. This is a powerful reminder for everyone enjoying the water as summer kicks off: Life jackets don’t work unless you wear them! Please stay safe out there, Cedar Creek Lake! 🌊🚀

Yesterday afternoon, the volunteers of PSFR responded to Peninsula Point Terrace for the report of a 22-year-old subject who had capsized a kayak on Cedar Creek Lake. The caller reported that the subject had gone underwater and had not resurfaced.

PSFR Chief 1 arrived on scene and found a civilian boat already searching the area. Mutual aid was immediately requested from Gun Barrel City Fire and Long Cove Fire for additional rescue boats. Tow Boat US Cedar Creek also responded and offered assistance, with a PSFR firefighter boarding their vessel to assist in search operations. A Texas Game Warden boat also responded to the scene.

Crews searched the area both visually and utilizing side-scan sonar until approximately 2200 hours before suspending operations for the night.

Earlier this morning, Texas Game Wardens returned to the scene with boats and dive teams to continue the search. PSFR personnel also responded back to assist as needed.

At approximately 1020 hours, the subject was recovered by the dive team.

This marks the second drowning incident on the lake that PSFR has responded to already this year. We strongly encourage everyone enjoying the lake to wear a properly fitted life jacket or flotation device at all times while on the water. A simple precaution can save a life.

The following agencies assisted on this incident:
β€’ PSFR
β€’ Gun Barrel City Fire
β€’ Long Cove Fire
β€’ Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
β€’ UT Health EMS
β€’ Tow Boat US Cedar Creek
β€’ Henderson County Sheriff’s Office
