Associate Russ Russell, Navy Seabee

Picture taken with my brother Bill and me at my Seabee base near Marble Mountain, Vietnam, in 1968.

I hadn't seen my brother for about two years. He was stationed aboard the USS Montrose, a troop transport, but I did receive a letter from him stating that they were scheduled to dock in Da Nang sometime in September.

Fortunately, I had to go to Da Nang for supplies and to take a damaged surfboard to the Small Craft Repair Shop to see if it could be repaired. The repair cost me a carton of ci******es and a six-pack of PBR. The shop was responsible for repairing Brown Water Navy boats.

While waiting, I asked the harbor master if he had any information about when, or if, the Montrose was scheduled to dock in the coming days. To my surprise, he pointed out toward the harbor and said it was already out there, waiting its turn to come in.

By the time I picked up my supplies and the surfboard, his ship was just pulling in, and I could see him standing on the bow. He didn't see me. I asked the chief standing on the first deck if I could come aboard and surprise my brother as part of the crew. He seemed delighted and escorted me to the bow.

Just as I saw Bill, he turned around and looked at me. He was surprised to see someone in greens holding an M14. Then he finally realized who I was, and we hugged for what seemed like an eternity.

Even after 50 years, we still talk about that day.

Our adventure driving to Marble Mountain and back is another story...

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Remembering Brad Lawrence

It is with great sadness that the Rim Country Marines mourn the loss of one of our own, Brad Lawrence, who passed away Monday night in a tragic aircraft accident in the Mazatzal Wilderness.

Brad was a valued member of our detachment and a familiar face in the Payson veteran community. He was also a longtime member of the Payson Pilots Association and a passionate aviator.

Our Commandant, Greg Dunlap, shared these words with our members:

โ€œBrad Lawrence was a grand man and a valued friend to us all. A man of integrity, open, classy, and public spirited. He will be missed.โ€

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bradโ€™s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him. We will share information in the days ahead as we determine how the Rim Country Marines can best honor Brad and pay our respects.

Rest easy, Brad. You will be missed.

Rim Country Marine Roscoe Dabney III was featured on The Church Studio Blog!
Roscoe helped shape Tulsa's Black musical heritage through his work as a drummer and bandleader with groups including The Magnificent Seven and Outback. Beyond music, Dabney became involved in civil rights work, ministry, broadcasting, and community service, eventually relocating to Arizona where he continued his outreach and served for more than a decade as chaplain for the Rim Country Marines.
His story reflects the often-overlooked musicians whose creativity helped establish the foundation of the Tulsa Sound.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Welcome aboard, Marine Glenn Lebrecht!

At our latest meeting, we were proud to welcome our newest detachment member, Marine Glenn Lebrecht, who served as an Audio Visual Technician stationed at Quantico. We are glad to have you as part of the Rim Country Marines family!

We also said farewell to our Sergeant at Arms, JC Larson, who is moving away and leaving our detachment. As a token of our appreciation for his service and time with us, JC was presented with a pair of commemorative combat boots.

Thank you, JC, for your service to our detachment and our community. You will always have a home with the Rim Country Marines. We wish you all the best in your next chapter!

The Rim Country Marines had a great time celebrating Independence Day at Green Valley Park!
We had a pull-up competition, and here contained is photo evidence that Commandant Greg Dunlap can still reach those whiskers over the bar. How many times? You had to be there. We had many young hard-chargers take the challenge, and we are looking good here in Rim Country ๐Ÿ’ช
