While headlines about rare diseases can be alarming, it’s important to keep risk in perspective. Hantavirus infections remain very uncommon in Massachusetts and across the U.S., and the overall risk to the general public is low.

Hantavirus is primarily spread through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva—most often when particles become airborne in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Simple precautions can further reduce risk:
• Avoid sweeping or vacuuming areas with rodent droppings
• Ventilate closed spaces (like sheds or cabins) before cleaning
• Use gloves and a disinfectant when cleaning up after rodents
• Seal gaps in homes to prevent rodent entry

For more information, including detailed recommendations on how to prevent rodent activity on your property and how to clean up droppings if needed, visit the linked document or contact us at [email protected].

Staying informed is your best approach.
