This Memorial Day weekend we remember those who laid their life down for our country. Our freedoms are the result of the bravery and determination of those who gave their life in military service. We ask that everyone exercise those freedoms safely this weekend.

During National Peace Officer's Memorial week we always remember one of our own. Giles County Deputy Sheriff Bill Broadwell was shot and killed when he and another deputy went to a home near Hoge's Store to search for a suspect wanted for assault.

The homeowner, who was not the wanted subject, opened fire on the deputies with a shotgun, killing Deputy Broadwell. The homeowner was arrested and taken out of the county by the Virginia State Police to protect him from an angry mob of citizens.

The 30-year-old man was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Deputy Broadwell was a United States Navy World War II veteran. He was survived by three children.

End of watch Saturday April 10, 1954.

**BURN BAN FOR GILES COUNTY IS ACTIVE**

Although the Virginia statewide 4 PM burn law expired on April 30, our county-issued burn ban remains in effect due to ongoing drought conditions.

Outdoor burning is still prohibited until the county burn ban is officially lifted. This includes brush piles, debris burning, open fires, and other outdoor burning activities.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to share updates as conditions change.

04/26/2026

Just a reminder to citizens that the 24/7 burn ban is still in effect throughout the county due to drought conditions. The burn ban applies to any open-air fires and will continue until the Board of Supervisors officially lift the ban, which will occur when environmental/drought conditions improve.
