๐ŸŒฒ Back by popular demand, it's time for another Forestry Friday Spotlight!

Today, we are excited to spotlight J.P. Cromwell, Area 12 Forester.

J.P. has been with MFC for 5 years, building his entire professional career right here with our agency. A proud product of Monroe County, J.P. grew up hunting and fishing from a young age, an early passion that sparked a lifelong commitment to conserving Mississippi's natural resources for the next generation.

He attended Itawamba Community College (2016โ€“2018) and then graduated in 2020 from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Forestry with a concentration in Wildlife Management.

As an Area Forester, J.P. wears many hats. His daily responsibilities include meeting with private landowners to provide forest management recommendations, writing management plans and CRP plans, conducting prescribed burns, wildland firefighting, operating dozers, and supervising a team of 6 personnel in his area.

When asked what he enjoys most, J.P. highlighted the camaraderie:

"The thing I enjoy most is getting to work with people who share the same values I do. Whether it is conducting a prescribed burn or fighting wildfire, I know I get to work with people who want to be a part of the greater good for our state."

His advice for future foresters?

"Make sure you have a strong work ethic. Forestry requires working outside in tough conditions, but if you have a passion for it, you'll never feel like you're going to 'work.' The key to success is the ability to listen and work with people from all backgrounds, keeping the betterment of both the individual landowner and the state in mind."

"Timber is our state's second-highest valued economic resource. Without professionals to properly manage it, we wouldn't have the timber products necessary for daily life, an abundance of recreational opportunities, or clean water to drink."

Thank you for your dedication, leadership, and hard work, J.P.!

Our Forest Health Coordinator, Josh Skidmore, recently returned from a national detail in Minnesota, deploying to the Superior National Forest near Ely to assist with the Bear Trap Fire, serving as the Plans Section Chief. He coordinated critical behind-the-scenes functions, including field GIS, mapping, infrared flights, fire behavior, weather monitoring, air quality, resource management, and daily situation reporting with field operations. His primary daily mission was delivering a comprehensive Incident Action Plan (IAP) to ensure safety, clear direction, medical contingencies, and total situational awareness for boots on the ground. He also led most incident strategy and planning meetings to keep multi-agency teams fully synchronized.

We are proud to have our team members sharing their expertise on national incidents and bringing those invaluable skills right back home to Mississippi.

Happy Birthday Smokey Bear!

We had a blast celebrating Smokey's 82nd birthday yesterday, and here he is to show you the Smokey Shuffle to help prevent wildfires!

Remember these steps before leaving any campfire:
๐Ÿ’ง Drown your campfire with water.
๐Ÿชต Stir the ashes and dirt together.
๐Ÿ’ง Drown it again.
โœ‹ Feel the ashes to make sure they are completely cold.

Watch the video to catch the moves and remember: Only you can prevent wildfires! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Our MFC crews recently deployed on a detail to assist with the Superior National Forest Wildfires in Minnesota.

The team was split into two separate fire suppression modules, with ten members each, tackling critical mitigation work on the ground:

They spent the majority of their time clearing brush and debris 30 feet out from structures and setting up robust water pumps and sprinkler systems. They also cleared brush and debris 40 feet back from roadways to create reliable control lines and potential places to backfire from if needed.

Beyond the hard work, our team wanted to share a special thank you to the people of Minnesota! Their hospitality and kindness meant the world to our team out there on the lines.

Never leave a debris burn unattended! ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’จ

Did you know that most of our wildfires in Mississippi start from escaped debris burning? It only takes a sudden wind gust or a moment away to let a yard cleanup turn into a wildfire.

Always keep your burn pile small, check the weather conditions beforehand, have a water source and tools nearby, and never walk away until the fire is completely out.

Protect our homes, our communities, and our forests, Mississippi! ๐ŸŒฒ
