🎶You're really just a pine cone! 🎶
That's right! With a few craft supplies you can turn a regular pine cone into your own teeny tiny Christmas Tree. This tiny tree can be used as a table decoration, a gift for a small toad in the garden or if you make a bunch, fun enrichment for your cat to knock over, again and again!

Tonight, shortly after sunset, Jupiter and Saturn will align in our night sky.
This Great Conjunction is the closest passing in nearly 400 years and the first time in almost 800 years that it's occurred at night! 😲
To view the phenomenon:
-Find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, such as a field or park. Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen even from most cities.
-An hour after sunset, look to the southwestern sky. Jupiter will look like a bright star and be easily visible. Saturn will be slightly fainter and will appear slightly above and to the left of Jupiter until December 21, when Jupiter will overtake it and they will reverse positions in the sky.
-The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you have binoculars or a small telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting the giant planet.
For more information, check out this article by NASA: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/the-great-conjunction-of-jupiter-and-saturn
Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to see these two gas giants align on the winter solstice.

It has been a blustery🍃 few days here in Pearland and if your yards look anything like ours, there are probably a few sticks to be picked up. Put those sticks to good use and create your very own Reindeer Stick Figure!
If you are choosing to use power tools like we did, adult supervision will be required to make sure this craft stays a reindeer, and not an "Oh dear!".

Holiday Virtual Trivia! 🎄
Hey DFNC, do we have any animals here that hibernate?
Answer:
The answer is yes and no. When an animal hibernates their metabolism, heart rate, breath rate and body temperature drop significantly, and they are very hard to wake. Animals that enter this state of hibernation are called true hibernators. Woodchucks, ground squirrels and bats are examples of true hibernators. Here in Texas, we have more animals that enter a less deep form of hibernation called torpor. During torpor, an animal’s body conserves energy by slowing their heart rate, breath rate and metabolism but it lasts for a much shorter period of time and the animal is easily woken. Opossums, raccoons, skunks, hummingbirds, and bears are examples of animals that enter torpor.

Keep #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth in your minds this year as you celebrate Thanksgiving.
You can celebrate both Thanksgiving and Native American cultures by recognizing some of the Thanksgiving dishes that are made with indigenous foods like turkey, corn, beans, pumpkins, squashes, maple, and wild rice.
Use this holiday to give thanks and celebrate your loves ones (safely!) but remember the impact that this holiday has had on Native Americans.
Looking for a Thanksgiving Craft? Try making the Three Sisters!
The Three Sisters are part of an ancient Native American farming method where the crops were grown together in the same mound. Each of the three sisters contributed to the health and growth of the others.
🌽Corn: Provides a natural pole for beans to climb.
🌱Pole Beans: Fix nitrogen in their roots, improving fertility of the soil and stabilizing the corn plants.
🎃Squash: the vines become a living mulch and the leaves provide shade and prevent soil moisture from evaporating.
The DFNC will be closed to the public in observance of holiday on Thursday, November 26th & Friday, November 27th.
We will resume regular business hours on Tuesday, December 1st.
Looking for an organization to help out on #GivingTuesday? Check out the Forever Parks Foundation of Pearland!
This organization is a huge supporter of the DFNC and are great advocates for the environment, parks, and education!

This week during #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth we would like to introduce you to the Black Drink.
The Black Drink was a tea made from the native Yaupon Holly plant, the only native source of caffeine in North America. And it makes the caffeine in coffee look like decaf!
Native Americans would trade this tea and consume it during ceremonies and ritual purification.
Despite no longer being a mainstream tea, there are still several Texas companies that sell it. Check them out: Lost Pines Yaupon Tea and CatSpring Yaupon

This great weather has been bringing people out to the John Hargrove Environmental Complex for activities like walking, birding, and fishing. As you explore and enjoy all of Pearland Parks, please be sure to follow the park rules. Not only do they keep you and others safe, but they also help our wildlife. Here’s a quick PSA from Outdoor August about responsible fishing practices and the potential impacts of fishing with nets (not allowed) instead of with a rod and reel (allowed).
🚨 NEW EXHIBIT ALERT 🚨 We have added a new snake to our animal ambassador family. Say “Hi” to Tex, the Western Hognose! 🐍 You can come visit Tex at the DFNC where he is enjoying his brand new habitat space.
Our Prairie Kingsnake is exploring his new habitat! The DFNC has upgraded a couple of our exhibits this week, so be sure to come check them out soon!

For our final #WomensHistoryWednesday we are shining the Spotlight on our namesake, Delores Fenwick. In 1982, Delores was one of the Founding Members of Keep Pearland Beautiful and worked for over 35 years to do just that. Her determination helped in the creation of the Stella Roberts Recycling Center which now processes over 120 tons of recycling each year. We are honored to be named after her and continue her legacy of environmental stewardship in Pearland. We were lucky enough to interview Delores and see what she thinks of the DFNC and how Pearland is adapting as an ever growing city. After the video, click on over to KPB's website to learn more about Delores, http://ow.ly/ffcD50yUt7B.
We may not like the grey skies or rainy days, but our Green Tree Frogs sure love them! We often hear our frogs calling throughout the DFNC on days like today. Now that you know what they sound like, keep your ears open the next time you're outside after the rain. You may hear some tree frogs of your own!
The City of Pearland’s Delores Fenwick Nature Center (DFNC) opened to the public on March 9, 2019 to serve as a hub for nature-based and environmental education. The DFNC, conceived and operated by the Natural Resources Division of the Pearland Parks & Recreation Department, consists of a 7,000 square foot facility that includes a great room with interpretive exhibits, a 50-seat classroom for hosting field trips and environmental workshops, and an open air pavilion for picnicking and outdoor classes.
The Delores Fenwick Nature Center is the perfect facility to help the Natural Resources Division further its mission “to protect, manage, and enhance the City’s natural resources, provide citizens with outdoor recreation opportunities, and to further the public’s understanding and appreciation of its natural resources through education and hands-on experiences.”
The DFNC is part of the greater John Hargrove Environmental Complex, which hosts almost 2 miles of pet-friendly walking/biking trails, abundant resident and migratory bird species, and other native wildlife and plants. Whether you are looking for opportunities to learn, exercise, or just be in nature, we have something for you and your family.
