Motorists are advised to expect significantly heavier traffic throughout the East End this week as visitors travel to the U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the Mattituck Lions Strawberry Festival. Increased traffic volume, congestion, and travel delays are anticipated on major roadways throughout the North Fork and South Fork. Additionally, travelers using the Shelter Island Ferry in Greenport may experience longer-than-usual wait times and vehicle lines during peak travel times.

May is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. This May, the Southold Town Police Department’s Peer Support Team organized its second annual Wellness Week.

This year’s program highlighted wellness in it’s many various aspects. Some of which included financial, dietary, psychological, physical, and spiritual wellness.

Officers had the opportunity to participate in services provided by local businesses, attend educational presentations, receive and enjoy breakfast and lunch throughout the week.

We’d like to take this time to acknowledge and appreciate all those whose participation in this year’s wellness program made it possible and have aided in our department’s wellness.

We'd also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our Peer Support Team for their hard work in organizing this year’s program. We would especially like to recognize Police Officer Faherty, whose effort was instrumental in planning and coordinating this year’s Wellness Week. On June 3rd, the Southold Town Police Department responded to a report of a baby deer found alone along Main Road in Southold, appearing to be separated from its mother.

Responding officers contacted off-duty Public Safety Dispatcher Tracey Carragher, a certified NYS DEC wildlife rehabilitator, who responded and determined that the mother was no longer in the area and the fawn needed to be cared for.

Dispatcher Carragher safely removed the fawn and will care for it until it is healthy and ready to be released back into the wild.

We are proud to recognize Dispatcher Carragher for her compassion and willingness to step in both on and off duty to help protect the wildlife in our community.

Today, the Southold Town Police Department proudly received its New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation certificate from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services at the Accreditation Council meeting in Albany, NY. Chief Grattan and Captain Latham attended the ceremony on behalf of the Department.

The Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program is voluntary and designed to improve an agency’s effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism while promoting training and foster public confidence in law enforcement.

Achieving accreditation is a significant accomplishment and reflects the hard work, professionalism and dedication of every member of the Department in serving the Southold community.

In addition to receiving the accreditation award, Captain Latham was presented with the John Kimble O’Neil Certificate of Achievement in recognition of his dedication and tireless efforts in ensuring the Department met or exceeded all 112 accreditation standards. This recognition is a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Palumbo and Assemblyman Schiavoni for attending the ceremony and for their continued support of the Southold Town Police Department and our mission to serve and protect our community.

Last week our officers were honored to participate in Heroes Day at Southold Elementary School where they were recognized by the students for their service to the community. We are truly grateful for the warm welcome and appreciation shown throughout the day.

Following the ceremony, students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations and learn more about the equipment and tools our officers use each day while serving and protecting the Town of Southold.

Thank you to the students, teachers, and staff at Southold Elementary School for inviting us to be part of such a special event. We always enjoy opportunities to connect with our community.

Our Traffic Control Officers have begun the 2026 summer season.

This year, you’ll notice a change in their uniforms. The previous brown uniforms have been replaced with new high-visibility green shirts. These uniforms were selected to improve safety and visibility while our officers are working on roadways directing traffic, assisting at special events, and checking beach permits throughout the Town.

Today, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who gave everything to protect them.

This morning, Southold Town Police and local fire departments responded to two separate fire incidents in the Town of Southold.

In Greenport, at 2:55am Southold Town Police and the Greenport Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Sage Boulevard. Upon arrival, the residence was heavily engulfed in flames. Firefighters from the Greenport, East Marion, Southold, Cutchogue, and Orient Fire Departments responded to extinguish the fire. All occupants safely evacuated the residence and no injuries were reported.

Later, at 5:36am, Southold Town Police and the Cutchogue Fire Department responded to a fire at the Southold Town Transfer Station, where responding units found a payloader fully engulfed in flames. The fire spread to a second payloader parked nearby before firefighters brought the fire under control. Firefighters from the Southold, Mattituck and Orient Fire Departments assisted at the scene.

Southold Town Police Detectives and the Suffolk County Arson Squad are investigating the causes of both fires. There is no indication that these fires are related.

The Town transfer station will open today following the completion of cleanup operations.

We would like to thank all responding fire departments, emergency personnel, and especially our Communications personnel, who managed two active incidents simultaneously, coordinating numerous responding agencies and resources.
