Earlier today, members of the Southold Town Police Department assisted the Shelter Island Police Department in the search for a missing swimmer in the waters off Shelter Island.

Southold Police Marine Units responded and assisted with conducting an extensive search of the surrounding waters. Our Drone Unit deployed a drone to assist with the aerial search, while members of our Dive Team responded to assist with the underwater search.

Following an extensive multi-agency effort, the subject was ultimately located in the water by members of the Southold Town Police Department Dive Team.

We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Local schools begin welcoming students back this week, which means more children and school buses on our roads.

Please slow down in school zones, stay alert, and watch for children crossing the street and getting on and off buses. Always be prepared to stop for a stopped school bus. When the red lights are flashing, STOP!

And to all the students, teachers, and school staff, good luck and have a safe and successful school year!

Yesterday, the Paul Drum Life Experience Project Police Fest brought families together at Mitchell Park for a fun filled morning focused on community engagement and public safety.
This annual event gives children and their families a firsthand look at some of the equipment and resources used to keep our community safe, while providing an opportunity to meet and interact with police officers in a friendly and relaxed environment.
The kids had a great time exploring off-road vehicles, police cars, the command van, drones, a fingerprint station and a K9 demonstration.
We would like to extend a special thankyou to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office for their participation, and also to the Riverhead Town Police Department and Southampton Village Police Department K-9 Units for helping with the K-9 demonstration.
And of course, thank you to the Paul Drum Life Experience Project for their continued partnership and commitment to providing positive experiences for children.

Southold Town Police and area fire departments responded to multiple incidents throughout the Town on Sunday, August 16.

Missing Kayaker – Greenport
At approximately 2:54 p.m., Southold Police Communications received a report of a kayaker who had become separated from his party in the Long Island Sound and could not be located. Officers deployed the department drone and located the kayaker. Marine units were directed to his location, safely brought him to shore, and reunited him with his party. Greenport Fire Department also responded to assist with the search.

Structure Fire – Southold
At approximately 8:33 p.m., officers responded to reports of a structure fire near Ackerly Pond Lane and Route 48. Officers located a fully involved barn fire at Cifarelli's Nursery that had spread to adjacent structures . Southold and Cutchogue Fire Departments responded and extinguished the fire. Southold Detectives and the Suffolk County Arson Squad are investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to be non-criminal.

Motor Vehicle Accident – Greenport
At approximately 10:29 p.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle accident involving a utility pole on Main Street. The operator, identified as 22-year-old Stephen Palermo of Southold, was determined to be intoxicated. Palermo was arrested and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of injuries before being held for arraignment.

We thank all of our local fire department volunteers for their assistance throughout the day.

The Southold Town Police Department and Riverhead Town Police Department recently conducted joint dive training, including both daytime and nighttime operations.

Training together allows our dive teams to sharpen their skills, share experience, and strengthen our ability to respond to emergencies on the water.

The Southold Town Police Department was proud to support the visit of “America’s Tall Ship” the United States Coast Guard Training Ship Barque Eagle to Greenport this weekend.

Throughout the weekend members of STPD were on hand to ensure that the thousands of visitors enjoyed their visit to the North Fork.

We hope you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming the Eagle and her crew back soon.

On August 7, 2026, the Southold Town Police Department received a report from a resident who had been contacted by an individual claiming to be her grandson. The caller claimed that he had been involved in a motor vehicle accident, arrested for DWI, and needed $6,720 in cash to post bail.

The victim was then contacted by another individual claiming to be an attorney for her grandson. A courier was sent to the residence to collect the money. Shortly afterward, the victim was told that additional money was needed for bail, at which point she contacted the Southold Town Police Department.

Southold Town Police patrol officers and detectives conducted an investigation that led them into Nassau County, with assistance from the Nassau County Police Department. The individual who had initially responded to the victim's residence was located and identified as Jonathan Manuel, 37 of Paterson, NJ, who admitted to taking the $6,720, which was recovered from his vehicle. Manuel was arrested by Southold Town Police and transported to Southold Town Police Headquarters for processing.

We would like to commend the detective and officers involved for their outstanding investigative work, quick thinking, and initiative, which led to the identification and arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the victim’s money.

Southold Town Police remind residents that law enforcement agencies, courts, and legitimate attorneys will not demand immediate payment of cash to prevent a loved one from being arrested or released from custody.

Town Warns Public to Be Aware of Fraudulent Emails
Appearing to Come from Zoning Board

The Town wants residents to understand the following:

• The Zoning Board of Appeals does not solicit or demand fee payments by email and does not contact residents or applicants by email to request money.
• These emails are not sent from the Town’s email system and are not associated with the Town of Southold, its offices, or its employees. The Town’s name is being used without authorization
• Legitimate Town business is conducted through official channels. Application fees are set by the Town Code and paid through the Town’s established processes at Town Hall and the ZBA office — never through an unsolicited email demanding immediate payment.

If you receive one of these emails, the Town urges you to:
• Do not pay. Do not send money, wire transfers, gift cards, or payment information in response.
• Do not click links or open attachments, and do not reply with personal or financial information.
• Check the sender’s address. Official Town email comes from an “.gov” or “town.southold.ny.us” address. Because scammers can also disguise (“spoof”) a real address, when in doubt, verify directly rather than relying on the address alone.
• Verify directly. Contact the Town of Southold Zoning Board of Appeals to confirm whether any request is genuine before acting.
• Report it. Report the email to the Town, and consider filing a report with the Southold Town Police Department (non-emergency), the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the FBI at ic3.gov, and the New York State Attorney General’s office.

Anyone who has already sent money or shared financial information in response to one of these messages should contact their bank or card issuer immediately and report the incident to the Southold Town Police Department at 631-765-2600. The Town takes the misuse of its name seriously and is taking appropriate steps to address the matter. Official updates will be posted at https://southoldtownny.gov.
