Many have asked on social media about yellow notices on one or more businesses in town. The answer is quite simple: Those businesses did not renew or obtain their annual business license, due January 1st.

Notices were mailed out in October, reminding all businesses that their license was coming due. We also identified many commercial ‘brick and mortar’ buildings in town which had not had a license in several years and some that had NEVER had a business license.

At the beginning of January, those who were not compliant were sent another letter that they had missed the deadline. There is a 30 day grace period where no late fees are added.

Toward the end of January, those who were still not compliant were sent an email, if we had an email address on file.

On Monday last week, those businesses who were still not compliant (around 19), were written another letter, this time bearing the Police Department letterhead. These letters were hand-delivered by city staff, letting them know that the business would be shut down if they did not become compliant within 4 business days. Those businesses which did not have anyone present to hand the letter to - the letter was taped in an envelope to the front door.

Yesterday (6 business days later), the remaining 7 businesses who were non compliant were posted with the notice from the Police Department. Several of those called in immediately, and got the situation fixed within a couple of hours, but a few did not and still have not.

During this whole process, some of the commercial ‘brick and mortar’ buildings we identified as never having a license called-in and explained why they did not need a city business license, and some of those were correct (only using the building for personal storage, etc). So they were checked off the list.

Why did the message posted on the door come from the Police Department? The Police Department is responsible for the enforcement of all city codes and bringing any violations before the municipal court. We are the executive branch of the city government. It’s also important to note that the city has been enforcing these laws in this exact same manner for the past several years at this same time - this is nothing new.

**UPDATE** just to be clear: we didn’t close down the donut shop. They had already been closed for more than a week on their own (thats their own business as to why). We just put up the notice on the door because there was no business license. Within a day of that posting, they renewed their business license and we took the sign down. They have been clear by the city to resume business whenever they choose.
