The Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds Office ask the public to note today's funeral services of Robert Hacker of Pekin, one of the few remaining World War II Veterans from Tazewell County.

Since December we have lost four of the surviving World War II Veterans, leaving us with only 15 remaining representing the "Greatest Generation". With the passing earlier this week of 106 year old Richard Lohnes of Green Valley, the oldest veterans are James Johnson of Pekin, William Elliott of Tremont, and Arthur Reynolds of Washington, all 102 years old.

REMEMBERING ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

The Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds Office is honored to have on permanent public display a handwritten letter from then attorney Abraham Lincoln to William D. Briggs, Esquire of Tremont, concerning how to proceed with a legal case for which both Lincoln and Briggs were representing the Harris Lime Rock Company. The letter was written on March 19, 1853.

This treasured original artifact contains Abraham Lincoln's signature twice, once for the note itself and then again for the postscript.

The framed letter is displayed in the lobby of the Tazewell County Clerk's Office, on the 2nd floor of the McKenzie Building in Downtown Pekin. You can read the letter itself and find more information about this historic artifact here: https://papersofabrahamlincoln.org/documents/D200737

This morning newly elected Tazewell County Auditor William Funkhouser and Tazewell County Finance Director Mindy Darcy are in our offices working with Tazewell County Clerk Bookkeeper Brenna Brackett to review our Tax Buyers Procedures.

On the first workday of each month, Bookkeeper Brenna Brackett is responsible to balance and reconcile our Tax Buyer's account. Throughout the previous month, individuals who over the past three year's have had their Property Taxes sold during the previous three annual public Tax Sales have had the opportunity to pay those past due taxes within our office. We collect that revenue and then send it to the various Tax Buyers.

That account each month is responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars, as yearly this office collects on average approximately $3 million in past due property taxes. Today's account balance from January was $212,703.19.

This is a monthly process that is completely within only the Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds Office. As such, we wanted to make sure the Auditor and Finance Director had the opportunity to witness the procedures themselves and see the open transparency of our office.
