This week's Terrific Teacher is Mrs. Chelsea Cobb! Mrs. Cobb works with our youngest learners to provide specialized, small group instruction. She displays patience as she guides her students to reach their individual goals. She works with a lot of different team members in our school to provide what's best for each one of her students. Congratulations, Mrs. Cobb, on being this week's Terrific Teacher!!

Today is brought to you by the letter S. S stands for Surveyor. Surveyors make precise measurements to determine property boundaries. They provide data related to the shape and contour of the Earth’s surface for engineering, mapmaking, and construction projects. Surveying involves both fieldwork and office work. When working outside, surveyors may stand for long periods and often walk long distances, sometimes in bad weather. Most surveyors work full-time.

Surveyors typically need a bachelor’s degree. They must be licensed before they can certify legal documents and provide surveying services to the public. The average salary for surveyors is $62,580. Employment of surveyors is projected to grow 11 percent in the next seven years, faster than the average for all occupations. Surveyors will continue to be needed to certify boundary lines, work on resource extraction projects, and review sites for construction.

Hopefully, you can catch Mrs. Jones before she heads out to the job site to survey for an East Washington School Corporation pool...

This week’s College of the Week is Taylor University. If you love purple and gold, Taylor may be the school for you—its colors are purple and gold, as well! Taylor operates on a four-one-four schedule, meaning they do one regular semester, then a month-long intensive semester (students usually take one course for several hours a day, do an internship, or do a travel course to another country), and then another semester.

Founded in 1846, it is one of America’s oldest evangelical Christian colleges. Taylor University was ranked first in U.S. News and World Report’s 2017 guide to America’s Best Colleges among 94 Midwest region colleges. TU has 90 undergraduate programs, in 61 majors, with popular focuses including education, business, new media and exercise science.

The Careers of the Week are Mail Carrier and Janitor. Both careers require a high school diploma and people skills. Mail carriers work with the p***c in the post office and when they are delivering mail. Mail carriers need to be in good shape because they have to work fast to get the mail sorted and on trucks and many of them have to walk many miles during the day. Janitors work with the public wherever they are cleaning, whether that is a school, an office building, a hospital, etc. Janitors need to pay close attention to detail and be able to work independently because many times they are working on their own but they have to make sure they get all the things they need to get done on their shift completed for their building to run efficiently.

LifeLine of the Week: Sense of Humor. A sense of humor is to laugh and have fun without hurting others. It is good to be able to tell jokes and laugh with friends, but we also have to be careful that our joke isn’t something that will hurt his/her feelings—then it isn’t actually funny!

Ask your child to tell you a joke. What do they think is so funny about it? Tell your child about a time when someone made a “joke” about you and you didn’t find it so funny. What did you do?

Mrs. Jones was so busy signing up recruits yesterday that she forgot to post pictures!

Today is brought to you by the letter R. R stands for Recruiter. Members of the U.S. military service maintain the U.S. national defense. Although some service members work in occupations specific to the military, such as fighter pilots or infantrymen, many work in occupations that also exist in the civilian workplace, such as nurses, doctors, and lawyers. Members serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, or in the Reserve components of these branches, and in the Air National Guard and Army National Guard. (The Coast Guard, which is included in this profile, is part of the Department of Homeland Security.) Human resources development personnel, or recruiters, work to find qualified people into the military, place them in suitable occupations, and provide training programs. Recruiting specialists provide information about military careers; explain pay, benefits, and military life; and recruit individuals into the military. Training specialists and instructors teach military personnel how to perform their jobs.

To join the military, applicants must meet age, education, aptitude, physical, and character requirements. These requirements vary by branch of service and for officers and enlisted members. Although entry requirements for each service vary, certain qualifications for enlistment are common to all branches:
--Minimum of 17 years of age
--U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
--Have a high school diploma or equivalent
--Never convicted of a felony
--Able to pass a medical exam

A recruiter can help a prospective service member determine whether he or she qualifies for enlistment or as an officer. A recruiter can also explain the various enlistment options and describe the military occupational specialties. All applicants must meet certain physical requirements for height, weight, vision, and overall health. Officers must be U.S. citizens. Officers and some enlisted members must be able to obtain a security clearance. Candidates interested in becoming officers through training in the federal service academies must be unmarried and without dependents. Service members are assigned an occupational specialty based on their aptitude, previous training, and the needs of their branch of service. All members must sign a contract and commit to a minimum term of service.

Basic pay is based on rank and time in service. The pay structure is the same for all branches. Members of the Armed Forces may receive additional pay based on their job assignment or qualifications. For example, they receive additional pay for foreign, hazardous, submarine, or flight duty, or for being medical or dental officers. Retirement pay is generally available after 20 years of service.

Mrs. Jones has contracts ready...See her today if you are willing and ready to sign up for the Army. But, remember, you must be able to pass physical and training tests...

It’s time for our Showcase of Students. Here are some students we’d like to recognize for using their lifelines this week.

Miss Underwood was covering Mrs. Starrett’s PE classes one day, and while Mrs. Stumler's class was doing their endurance running, a student fell and his mouth was bleeding. Jacksyn Brown instantly was at his side with a hand on his back asking if he was ok and saying he would take him to the nurse. Miss Underwood was so impressed by how quickly Jacksyn came to his friend's side and wanted to help him any way he could.

Daylon Bussone stopped in the hallway on the way back to class one afternoon and picked up some trash on the floor and threw it away. He even apologized to his teacher for getting behind in the class line, but explained that he needed to throw some trash away. He used his manners and was very helpful. (Chelsea Cobb)

Heaven Moss also let many people, including the teacher, cross in the hallway when a long line of students was going to prevent them from crossing for a few minutes. She used her manners and was very kind. (Chelsea Cobb)

Della Mollet and Ella Greene have been so caring of our school grounds! They found some trash outside and threw it in the trash can! (Jenna Jones)

Our 3rd and 4th graders have been using their lifelines of perseverance, effort and personal best to complete their ILEARN tests this week!
