Alabama Wildlife Center

Alabama Wildlife Center Founded in 1977 as a small, home-based, all-volunteer organization, the Alabama Wildlife Center is now Alabama’s largest wildlife rehabilitation center.

Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation clinic and education center open 7 days per week/365 days per year for clinic admissions of injured or orphaned birds found across Alabama and open 6 days per week for self-guided tours! The Alabama Wildlife Center is Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation and conservation education center and annually receives almost 2,000 birds f

rom more than 100 different species and provides over 300 conservation education programs every year. AWC is a nonprofit organization whose dual mission is:

- To provide medical and rehabilitative care for Alabama’s injured and orphaned native birds in order to permit their return to the wild.

- To educate people in order to heighten awareness and appreciation of Alabama’s native wildlife. Since its inception, well over 50,000 native Alabama wild animals have been helped because of the efforts of the Alabama Wildlife Center. The organization has been in continuous service 365 days a year for over 30 years! AWC’s Wildlife Help Line provides free advice and information on how to deal with all kinds of wildlife problems and emergencies. It has been in continuous operation 365 days a year since 1981 and receives thousands of calls each year. More than 100,000 Alabamians have been helped over the years! The Alabama Wildlife Center has five full-time permanent employees who care for the animals, provide educational programming and manage the business affairs of the organization. In addition, AWC relies heavily on its volunteer staff to carry out its various animal rescue, rehabilitation and public education services. The Alabama Wildlife Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receives no public funds. All current cash income is derived from membership dues, individual donations and corporate and foundation grants. For each dollar contributed, AWC receives approximately two dollars in donated goods and services from individuals, businesses and the State of Alabama.

To ensure the highest-quality experience for our campers, Alabama Wildlife Center has made the decision to move our Summer Camp sessions from June to July.

We sincerely apologize for this change and appreciate the understanding and flexibility of the families who have already registered. This additional time will allow our team to finalize camp preparations and create the engaging, hands-on wildlife experiences that make Summer Camp such a memorable part of the season.

Registration for July Summer Camps is now open and the early bird discount has been extended to June 15th! We can't wait to welcome campers for a summer filled with wildlife encounters, outdoor exploration, and unforgettable learning experiences.

Meet Flora! 🪶

Flora is one of our foster American kestrels in the clinic. She was found after being shot in a dove field and suffered a wing injury severe enough to make her non-releasable.

Now, Flora helps us in a different way.

During baby bird season, young kestrels in rehabilitation can learn a lot from being around an adult bird. Seeing another kestrel helps teach natural behaviors, confidence, food competition, and awareness that humans can’t provide. Even something as simple as watching another bird eat and react to its environment can make a huge difference in their development. Despite being North America’s smallest falcon, Flora is still a fierce little predator. Falcons have a special notch on their beak called a tomial tooth that helps them quickly dispatch prey!

She may not be able to return to the wild, but Flora is helping raise the next generation of wild kestrels 💛

Please join us in congratulating our very own, Katie Stubblefield, on being named an Unsung Hero by UAB’s Alabama Public Service Training Initiative (APSTI).

This incredible event brought together community leaders from across Alabama to celebrate the often-overlooked individuals making a lasting impact in their communities every single day.

Katie has been an integral part of the Alabama Wildlife Center team for more than 20 years and currently serves as our Clinic Director. Her dedication, compassion, and tireless work ethic have helped shape AWC into the organization it is today.

We are incredibly proud of Katie and all she has accomplished, and we hope you’ll join us in giving her a well-deserved round of applause!

In case you missed our 2026 For the Birds Gala, Damion Bankhead and Story Bank Media Co. did an amazing job capturing the unforgettable evening at The Club, Inc. atop Red Mountain.

From up-close encounters with our ambassador birds to an inspiring night of music, community, and conservation, this year’s gala was truly one to remember. We are beyond grateful to every sponsor, attendee, volunteer, donor, and auction participant who made the evening such a tremendous success.

Thanks to your generosity, we not only reached our sponsorship goal of $100,000 — we exceeded it by raising more than $105,000 in support of the Alabama Wildlife Center’s mission.

These funds are critical in helping AWC cover the more than $700,000 in annual costs required to operate one of Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation centers. Every dollar helps us continue providing lifesaving care to nearly 1,500 injured and orphaned birds each year while also delivering conservation and wildlife education programs to thousands of people across our state.

Because of supporters like you, AWC can continue operating 365 days a year — rescuing wildlife, educating communities, and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.

Thank you for helping us make this our biggest and most impactful gala yet. 🦅

Baby bird season has officially flooded our clinic 🐣💛

From tiny songbirds to baby woodpeckers like this little guy, our team is fully in the middle of baby season and it’s only getting busier.

Right now, our clinic is filled with hungry mouths to feed, babies needing warmth and care, and a whole lot of tiny personalities keeping us on our toes.

While these babies are cute, caring for them takes a huge amount of time, resources, and specialized care. Every rescue, donation, share, and supporter helps make this work possible.

Get ready for lots more baby bird updates because the season is definitely here 🐦✨

Such a fun day at our DIY Bird Feeder class 🐦🎨

Everyone got to hang out in the Observatory watching birds come to the feeders while painting their own, which honestly made it even better.

Our Songbird Coordinator also stopped by and talked about how to make your backyard more bird-friendly and ways to get more birds to actually show up.

Just a really good mix of relaxing, learning, and being around birds 💛
