Domestic violence is not a rare occurrence. It is a widespread public health crisis impacting individuals across every community, workplace, and neighborhood. πŸ“‰πŸ”

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, intimate partner violence alone affects more than 12 million people every single year. Behind that statistic are millions of individuals navigating trauma, isolation, and fear in spaces that should be safe.
Awareness is the foundation of change. By understanding the sheer scale of domestic violence, we can better understand the critical need for robust community infrastructure, comprehensive support systems, and trauma-informed care.🀝

No one should have to face this reality alone. SafeHouse is dedicated to providing survivors with the resources, emergency shelter, and professional guidance needed to rebuild their lives in safety and peace.
If you or someone you know needs support, our confidential resources are available around the clock.

SafeHouse Executive Director Janelle Sierra was honored to join advocates from across the country in Washington, D.C., for the The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) and National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV) Advocacy Days on June 2–3.

Alongside fellow leaders from Alabama's domestic violence programs and the Alabama Coalition against Domestic Violence (ACADV), Janelle met with members of Congress to discuss the importance of federal funding for survivor services.

This year's conversations were especially timely, as advocates called for the immediate release of delayed funding opportunities and appropriated funds that sustain programs like SafeHouse. Delays can have real impacts on services and support available to survivors across our communities.

Janelle was joined by Derek Osborn (Turning Point Alabama), Jessica Atchley (The Willow Path), Krychelle Smith (2nd Chance, Inc.), Latasha Simms (ACADV), and Erica Sanders (ACADV).

When our clients look back on their time with us, their feedback highlights the profound impact of connection and professional care.

Providing emergency shelter is about more than just offering a safe place to sleep; it’s about establishing the social and emotional infrastructure survivors need to rebuild their lives. Through dedicated counseling and shared group experiences, individuals find a network of peers and professionals who truly understand their journey.
Thank you to our licensed clinical team and to everyone in our community who helps keep these life-saving, transformative resources available 24/7. πŸ‘πŸŒŸ

The impact of trauma extends far beyond the immediate crisis, frequently influencing long-term public health and workforce stability.
When an individual experiences domestic or sexual violence, the neurological and psychological aftermath can manifest as complex health challenges.
According to Mental Health America, survivors are at an increased risk of developing these five conditions:
Depression: A mental health condition causing persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, and a loss of pleasure in daily activities.
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): An anxiety disorder that can develop following the experience or witnessing of a traumatic event.
Substance Use Disorders: Complex conditions influenced by a combination of hereditary, environmental, and social factors.
Eating Disorders: Conditions such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and OSFED.
Anxiety: Illnesses that cause individuals to feel frightened, distressed, and uneasy without an apparent external trigger.
Addressing these challenges requires a trauma-informed approach across our community infrastructure.
