Week 4 | Communities Without Limits

As we close Building Safety Month we end with a very important consideration. Creating a truly safe community means ensuring every person, regardless of age, ability or circumstance, can move through and use the spaces around them.

When spaces are easy to understand and easy to navigate, they work better for everyone, from children and seniors to people recovering from injury or living with disabilities.

Meeting accessibility standards is an essential part of building safety. A more accessible built environment is easier to evacuate, easier to navigate and easier to use, which benefits every member of the community.

Communities without limits embrace built environments that are welcoming, intuitive and enjoyable by all. Bryan County is Built to Last.

Week 3 | Prepared to Protect

A stronger community takes all of Bryan County working together. Community Development, BEMA, Fire & Rescue and other Bryan County departments work toward one shared goal: helping build a safer, stronger community.

Through building innovation, resilience, safety and preparedness, these efforts help protect homes, families and property.

Residents can take action by visiting the Bryan County Preparedness Portal on our website to review emergency resources, make a plan and stay informed.

Now is also the time to review your emergency plan and insurance coverage, especially flood insurance. Hurricane season begins in less than two weeks, and it is better to prepare before severe weather is in the forecast.

Flooding can happen even outside high-risk flood zones, and most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

Find your zone and learn how to get started with flood insurance here:

Week 3 | Prepared to Protect

Designing & Retrofitting for Disaster Resilience

Smart design, strong codes and community preparedness work together to help protect people, homes and property.

Designing and retrofitting for disaster resilience can help buildings better withstand natural hazards like severe weather, flooding, hurricanes and fire.

Modern building codes and proper construction practices support stronger foundations, safer materials, reinforced roofs, impact-rated windows, elevated utilities and other features that can reduce damage and help communities recover faster.

As Community Development takes steps to support building safety across Bryan County, there are also simple steps you can take at home:

โ€ข Sign up for alerts and warnings with BEMA
โ€ข Make a family emergency plan
โ€ข Follow tips to make your home safer
โ€ข Know your evacuation routes
โ€ข Assemble or update emergency supplies
โ€ข Document and insure your property

Prepared homes help build prepared communities. Bryan County is Built to Last.

Calling on a professional.

Because requirements can vary, Building Safety departments can provide code interpretation support and consultations for home improvement projects, including electrical, mechanical, structural or plumbing work. Follow-up inspections provide a measure of safety to protect your life and property.
