Pen Argyl Borough

Pen Argyl Borough Our community began in 1853 when Joseph Kellow discovered slate. Currently there is still one slate quarry that is still in operation.

Pen Argyl, a Borough of 3600 residents, is located in Northampton County, PA, and is near Routes 33 and 80 at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain and the Appalachian Trail. Pen Argyl received its name from a Welsh word meaning “head” and from the Anglo-Saxon word “argylite” meaning slate rock. With the influx of quarrymen from Cornwall, England, the town began to grow and was incorporated in

1882 and became part of the area known as the Slate Belt. The quarrymen and their families brought with them the baking of “pasties”, a beef meat pie, which was the popular food to take to work in the quarries. Pasties can still be bought today at Mr. Pasties located in Pen Argyl. Today Pen Argyl is known for its historic Dentzel carousel which is housed at Weona Park. This carousel was purchased in 1923 and is one of the few remaining Dentzel carousels that has stationary wooden animals. The carousel is open for rides during the summer park season.

🎨 A Fresh Coat of Tradition at Borough Hall

For many years, the front door of Borough Hall featured our office information hand-painted directly on the glass. Over time, the lettering had become faded, damaged, and largely illegible, but Borough staff felt it was important to preserve this small piece of Borough Hall’s history.

To bring it back to life, Councilwoman Anderson reached out to Pen Argyl High School art teacher Ms. Alison Caesar. Ms. Caesar helped us find two talented students, Will Manning and Andie Lenig, who volunteered to take on the project. The Borough supplied the paint, and after staff removed the remnants of the old lettering and prepared the glass, Will and Andie carefully repainted all of the office information by hand.

The result is a beautiful restoration that once again makes our office information visible to residents while preserving a tradition that has been part of Borough Hall for many years.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Will Manning, Andie Lenig, and Ms. Alison Caesar for their time, talent, and willingness to help with this project. Their work will hopefully adorn Borough Hall and serve the community for many years to come.

Thank you for helping keep a small piece of Pen Argyl’s history alive! 💚🏛️

This past Friday, Weona Park was filled with excitement as Pen Argyl Borough hosted its annual Founders Day celebration and officially marked the opening of Phase II of the Weona Park Playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

With perfect weather and hundreds of families in attendance, the community came together to enjoy free carousel rides, mini golf, hot dogs, cupcakes, popsicles, birch beer, and, of course, the brand-new playground expansion. It was wonderful to see so many residents and visitors enjoying the park and celebrating this exciting milestone for our community.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Slate Belt Chamber for organizing the ribbon-cutting ceremony and to everyone who played a role in making the new playground a reality. This project has been years in the making, and it would not have been possible without the support and dedication of many individuals, organizations, and partners.

Special thanks to Senator Lisa M. Boscola for presenting a commemorative plaque, as well as PA State Rep. Ann Flood and U.S. Congressman Ryan Mackenzie for providing certificates recognizing the occasion.

We also want to thank Fidelity Bank for bringing its ice cream truck to the event, which was a huge hit with attendees of all ages.

Events like Founders Day remind us what makes Pen Argyl special—a strong community that comes together to celebrate, support one another, and invest in the future. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a success!
