Umatilla National Forest plans to start prescribed fire operations next week. We estimate this work to start as early as Monday, Oct. 26, and continue through the fall as weather conditions allow. The Forest Service uses prescribed fire to help reduce overgrown vegetation, protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.
For public safety, the Umatilla National Forest may temporarily close prescribed fire areas during prescribed fire operations. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.
The Umatilla National Forest works closely with State agencies in accordance with each State’s Smoke Management Plans. The Forest Service closely monitors smoke during prescribed fires and prescribed fires are timed for best smoke management. Visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ for current air quality information.
Please do not report these fires, as firefighters will remain on scene throughout ignitions and patrol afterwards. All burns are monitored until declared out.
The Forest Service will evaluate conditions before ignition. If conditions are not favorable, planned prescribed fire activities may be postponed or canceled.
