What better way to celebrate than heading out to a Pa State Park with your four-legged friend!
Take a a walk, hit the trails, or maybe even go for a float.

Don't forget, all dogs must be leashed and under control at all times while visiting Pennsylvania State Parks.

No, that is not a bo**er hanging
out George Washingtons nose.

Remember our little Monarch egg
from the other day?

It hatched!!

What you see here is a Monarch caterpillar
in its first stage of life.

This stage is called the first instar.
This instar lasts roughly 1-3 days before it will molt and grow into the second instar.

This stage first starts out by eating its egg and then beginning to eat circular patterns around the leaf of the milk w**d. In this stage they are 2-6 mm in length on average.

Follow along as this little caterpillar goes through the five instar stages of the next 10-14 days before it goes into its chrysalis.

Monarch Madness!

This time of year, if you see a park staff member wandering around in a field or a ditch along the road don’t worry, we likely aren’t lost, we are looking for monarch butterflies and their young.

While we are on our search we key in on one plant in particular and this plant is milkw**d.

Why milkw**d?

Milkw**d is the plant species that monarchs need to lay their eggs on and that their caterpillars spend their time on until they hatch from their chrysalis to become an adult.

Monarch eggs are tiny and it takes a keen eye to spot. The average size of a monarch egg is roughly 1mm x 1mm.

Follow this monarch through its various stages of life until we tag and release it here at Parker Dam.
